“I can try,” she said.

“Just do your best, okay?”

“Okay,” she said. “The deviled eggs are ready. Shall we take them through?”

“Okay,” I said. “Thanks, guys.”

“Oh, you’re welcome.”

I was about to head out of the kitchen when I heard footsteps entering. I turned and looked around. It was Finn standing there in a black suit. He looked so handsome. My heart jumped for joy as he headed toward me.

“Hey there, sexy,” he said. His eyes roved up and down my body. “You look phenomenal.”

“Thank you. You look kind of—”

“Hot,” he said, answering for me.

“I mean, you look kind of handsome, sure.”

“I’m glad to hear it,” he said taking my hand and twirling me around. “So, appetizers nearly ready? The guests are getting hungry.”

“Yeah, I was just checking. They’re just doing the last touches. I’ve been cooking for a long time today, and so I’m a little tired,” I said. I wasn’t sure where the lie came from. I could see my sisters glaring at me. They were most probably feeling a bit put out, seeing as they were the ones that had done all the cooking.

“Well, I’m sure it’s going to be great,” he said. “It smells…” He sniffed. “Well, it will be great,” he said.

I tried to ignore that he hadn’t said it smelled fantastic. I sniffed myself, and I could smell something akin to charcoal. Just how much had Polly burned the lamb? I didn’t even want to see it. I just hoped it could pass. My mind was racing as I tried to think of an alternative to the rack of lamb.

“Did you guys remember to do the scallops?” he asked.

I froze as I realized I’d been so caught up in talking to my sisters about the oral sex I’d engaged in that I had completely forgotten that I was going to do scallops and branzino.

“Yeah, um, they need to be prepared freshly, so I’m just going to do that in a couple of minutes,” I said, smiling at him. “Do you want to go to your guests and let them know that food is on the way?”

“Okay,” he said. “Sure.” He kissed me on the cheek and headed out of the room.

“What scallops and what branzino?” Chelsea said, looking at me. “Did you buy that and I didn’t see?”

“No. I completely forgot.” I hung my head, trying to figure this situation out. “Oh my God. What am I going to do?” I felt like crying.

“Take a deep breath, girl,” Polly said. “We didn’t come this far for you to fuck it up. No scallops and no fish.”

“I have an idea,” Chelsea said.

“Yeah?” I asked her.

“So we need scallops and branzino, right?”

“Yeah.”

“There’s a Red Lobster a couple of miles away.”

“Do they do scallops and branzino?” I asked her.

“I don’t know, but they do seafood, right?”

I bit down on my lower lip. I’d already had one catastrophe with takeout food.

“I don’t know. I don’t want him to think—”
