Chapter Twelve

Lennox

“No.”

“No?” I gasped.

Mindy shook her head. “I can’t afford to have you off for a week. I can maybe do one day off, but that is it. How about Wednesday?”

Wednesday? Who the hell wants a one day off, let alone a freaking Wednesday. You needed Wednesdays off for doctor’s appointments, not when the guy you have been talking to for the past three years finally comes to visit.

I had called Jonas on the way to work and had been so excited to put in my request for time off. I hardly ever took a vacation and had been certain it wouldn’t be a problem to get some time off.

I was wrong.

“I’m giving you plenty of notice, Mindy. And Melody said she could help cover my shifts.”

Mindy shook her head. “I need two people working the one to nine shift, and that is you and Melody.”

I looked around and frowned. “You have four people working right now. Why can’t you put one of them on the late shift for a week, and you can make do with three during the day?” That was what she had done when I worked the day shift when I started. It had been me and two other employees. Suddenly Mindy had shoved me on the late shift and then put four on the day shift. It didn’t make any sense.

“We’re busier during the day, Lennox. I wouldn’t expect you to understand how to run a business, though. I need you on the late shift, and I can only give you off Wednesday next week. Take it or leave it.” She grabbed her clipboard and wandered over to the display of tanning oils.

“You can’t do this. This is crazy. Who needs four people just to check in customers and clean beds?” I demanded. Mindy and I did it by ourselves with no problem and still had plenty of downtime. The day shift wasn’t that much busier.

“Lennox,” Melody called.

I held up my hand and shook my head.

“Excuse me?” Mindy demanded. “Who are you to tell me how to do my job?”

“I can tell you how to do your job because a blind person could run a tanning salon. You don’t need four people sitting around during the day. It’s not like you guys are doing extra work because you have so many people.” I pointed at Jane, who was sitting at the front desk twirling a pen. “What the hell is Jane doing right now?”

“She’s waiting for customers and is in charge of signing people up for tanning packages,” Mindy growled.

“The customers we have barely even talk to us because they know how to run the beds and know if the light is green on a room, they can go in.” It was a pretty easy system. The light was green, go on in. If the light above the door was red, don’t go in because someone is in there or the room needed cleaning.

It did not take four people and a manager to run the tanning salon.

“I don’t care what you have to say, Lennox. You cannot have five days off in a row, and you are not going to change my mind.” She tucked her pen behind her ear and folded her arms over her chest. “I am the manager.”
