“What’s the pay? And I also need benefits.”

She grabbed my keys and opened the passenger door. “I’m going to take that as a joke and hope that you are getting ready to chill out for a few hours before the biker boy calls.”

“I don’t think you’re really giving me any choice.”

She pushed me into the car, and she jogged around the front after slamming my door shut.

“Why didn’t we just take your car?” I pulled the seat belt over my chest and buckled up.

“Because I need gas, and stopping for gas is not part of self-care. That is Perry’s job.” She started my car and pulled out of the parking lot. “He walked to work today, so he can swoop by and pick up my car when he is done.”

“What is he going to say when you tell him you quit?” I asked.

She turned left and headed out of town. “He’s already surprised I stayed as long as I did. I was always bitching about Mindy to him. He’ll be glad he doesn’t hear about Sun Studio anymore. Maybe I’ll open my own tanning salon and put thundercunt out of business.”

“Do it,” I drawled. “I’ll be your manager.”

Melody shook her head. “You are moving to Wisconsin, honey. I have a feeling you are going to be gone before the month is up.”

I rolled my eyes. “That is moving pretty fast, Melody. I haven’t even met him yet.”

“Technicality,” she sang. “Once you see him, I bet you won’t be able to keep your hands off of each other.” She wiggled her eyebrows. “He hasn’t been with a woman for six years, Lennox. I’m shocked he wasn’t on your doorstep this morning.”

I sighed and leaned my head back. “We went back and forth about me being there when he was released, but I decided he needed to see his family first. They are more important than me.”

“And that makes you a saint, Lennox. If I were you, I would have been in that prison parking lot in only a robe and a smile, waiting for Perry to bust out of those prison walls.”

“As if Perry would ever do anything that would land him in prison,” I laughed. “The worst thing the man does is play cards with his friends all the time.”

“Oh, I’m sure if something were to happen to me, he would go all caveman and defend my honor.” She glanced at me. “As soon as his poker game was over.”

“Is that you poking fun at Jonas?” I asked. Melody knew the whole story with Jonas. There wasn’t any point in hiding it. He had been defending the people he loved, and things didn’t go his way.

“Girl, no. That was me poking fun at my husband for not being a badass biker. Doesn’t every girl want a man who would kill for her?”

I stared out the window and bit my bottom lip. “It is the dream, right?” And dreams never seemed to happen for me.

“Stop it,” Melody called. “I can feel you getting inside your own head. Just stop worrying so much, Lennox. You’re worrying about things you shouldn’t.”

“Then stop mentioning them to me,” I retorted.

“I could tell you there might be a possibility Jonas could have a ten-inch anaconda, and you would sit there worrying about that.”

“Melody,” I gasped. “You are a married woman talking about a ten-inch anaconda.”

Melody smirked. “Honey, for all you know, I live with a ten-inch anaconda.”

I stuck my fingers in my ears and shook my head. “No, no, no,” I chanted. I did not want to have my brain connect Perry and ten-inch anacondas.Oh god. There it was in my mind.

“Self-care,” I called. “Let’s talk about self-care, and I promise not to worry about anything as long as you keep private information about Perry private.”

“We’re getting manicures and pedicures,” Melody laughed.

“Hey, I thought you couldn’t do those anymore since you don’t have a job at Sun Studio?”

A smirk spread across Melody’s lips. “Honey, I don’t like to advertise the fact I have money. As far as everyone in this town knows, I’m just getting by like everyone else.”

“So I’m assuming I need to keep that information under wraps, huh?”
