“So, you’re moving here,” she stated.

I nodded.

“Does Jonas know?”

“Uh, he was the first one to know, Meg,” I laughed. “He’s kind of the reason why it’s happening.”

She sighed heavily. “You have no idea how relieved I am. I see the way he is with you, and I know it would break his heart if you went back to Iowa.” She pulled me into a tight hug.

“It would break my heart, too, if I left.”

“My sweet Jonas has been through a lot in his life, and I can’t tell you how often I hoped and prayed that things would finally go his way. I didn’t know when he got released from prison what kind of man he would be. When life hands you so many losses, there comes a point where the hate and bitterness can just take you over. But you helped, so that didn’t happen. You gave him something good in a world where bad was all he knew.”

“He makes me good, too, Meg. I was pretty lost when I started writing to him. My brother had gone to prison, and I was all alone. We needed each other. I love him.” I hadn’t even said those words to Jonas yet, but I knew they were true.

She sat back and patted my arm. “And that is why I know you two are meant for each other. A freaking blind man could see it while he picked up his hammer and saw.”

“I, uh,” I stuttered. “Yes?” What in the world?

Meg jumped up and pointed to the heat press on the pool table. “Now, let’s talk about what I really came here for.”

“Got some more shirts to make?” I asked.

“Yes, I do, but I don’t have time to do it because I need to be at the body shop wrangling the boys to actually get the cars done.” She grabbed my hand and pulled me up. “So I need your help. How would you feel about running Day and Knight Tees for me? I know we’re just starting out, but I’ve already got a stack of shirts to make for Pole Stars, and Dom’s Pizza asked if we could make their uniform shirts for them.”

“That’s great, Meg, but I don’t know the first thing about making T-shirts and using all of these machines.”

Meg rolled her eyes. “You’re sweet to think that I actually know what I’m doing, but I just pull up YouTube and watch all the making shirts for dummies videos. You’d be surprised at what you can learn from a two-minute video.” She pulled me over to the heat press. “Jonas mentioned that you need a job, and I need someone to help me. I also need to mention that King is a little perturbed that I started Day and Knight Tees with Cyn because we’re supposed to be retiring and just chilling, but I just can’t seem to do that. So you’d be doing me a favor by taking over Day and Knight Tees.”

“I thought I was just going to work for you,” I mumbled. Now she was pretty much saying Day and Knight Tees was going to be mine.

“Well, no,” she laughed. “All of this is yours as long as you make me T-shirts when I want them.”

“I, uh...” This was insane. I had no idea how much any of this equipment was, but I didn’t think it was cheap.

“I also have four bins of shirts at my house. I found a sale, and well, I don’t really do anything small. Go big or go home, honey,” she laughed. “So, what do you say? Cyn and I will, of course, help you figure everything out, well, as much as we can. I can send you the YouTube videos that helped me.”

“Meg,” I laughed. “This is insane.”

“Do it.”

I whirled around to see Jonas and King sitting down at the bar.

“You knew about this?” I asked.

Jonas nodded. “It was my idea. I got sick of King bitching about it over at the shop, so I figured you could take everything over.”

“I don’t even know how to make a T-shirt, Jonas.”

King shrugged. “Does anyone know how to do anything until they actually try and do it?”

“And you’re just putting designs on the shirts. It’s not like you’re actually making them.” Meg bumped her hip into me and propelled me toward the bar. “You’ll have steady orders between the garage, strip club, and Pole Stars. Plus, I know everyone in town. Once we spread the word you’re making custom shirts, you’ll have more business than you know what to do with it.”

I stared at Meg, and her words echoed in my mind. The opportunity she was giving me was too good to pass up, but accepting it meant venturing into uncharted territory. Taking risks that both excited and frightened me. “This is crazy, but yes,” I whispered. “Yes, I would love to take over the reins of Day and Knight Tees.”Holy cow!

“That’s life with the Devil’s Knights,” King shrugged. “One day, you’re trying to find room for three thousand boxes of mac and cheese, and the next day you’re running a T-shirt business.”

A huge smile spread across my lips. “I’m really sorry about the mac and cheese.”
