“I think you might have got the wrong side of the story, Anne,” King called. “Your brother threw Birdie down a flight of stairs and then came to Rockton to make sure she kept her mouth shut.”

“Liar!” Anne screamed. “My brother would never hurt anyone.”

“He killed Layla!” Jonas shouted. “He ran her down like she was nothing. All he cared about was himself, and it didn’t matter who he hurt.”

“You trapped him. What else was he supposed to do? He was just trying to get away from you stupid bikers!” Anne pushed me further into the room. “If you would have just left him alone, none of that would have happened.”

“But it did happen,” King called. “He killed Layla, and Jonas made sure he paid the price for that. He’s the one who came to Rockton, Anne. We didn’t even know who he was until he started messing with Birdie.”

“Who are you to make my brother pay?” she demanded. “You are no one!”

“That may be what you think, but I know the truth,” Jonas called. “Just let her go, and you and I can talk. Maybe we can figure out what exactly happened.”

“I’m not stupid,” she screamed.

A loud click sounded when she pulled back the safety. “You know what,” she laughed, “I have an even better plan now.” Anne leaned into me and pressed her face into mine. “He took someone I loved away from me, so it’s only fair I take you away from him. Are you ready to die, slut?”

My body quaked, and I shook my head. “Please don’t do this,” I pleaded.

“It’s too late to turn back now,” she whispered. “The only way this ends is for Jonas Young to pay for his sins.”

Sirens sounded in the distance, and my heart leaped.

I didn’t know how, but the police were coming.

“Which one of you called the police?” Anne demanded.

“No one has moved, Anne,” King pointed out.

“Who else is here?” she demanded.

Jonas shook his head. “We’re the only ones here. It wasn’t like we knew you were coming, Anne. We didn’t even know you existed.”

“What?” Anne hissed.

That might have not been the best thing for Jonas to say. It was probably best not to antagonize the crazy bitch with a gun.

“We didn’t even know you,” Meg explained. “Jonas paid for killing your brother. He shouldn’t have beaten him. He’s sorry for what he did.”

“He didn’t pay because he’s still alive!”

As each second passed by, I knew the possibility of reasoning with Anne was useless.

“Everyone in the kitchen,” she ordered.

Meg slowly stood, and King dropped the footrest.

“Put your hands in the air and move slowly.”

King held his hands in the air and rose from the chair. Meg walked into the kitchen, and King moved in front of her.

“Move!” she screamed at Jonas.

Jonas’s eyes flared, but he stepped toward the kitchen. “You aren’t going to get away with this,” he growled.

“Oh, I’m sure I will. Maybe I’ll plead insanity and get six years,” she cackled. She prodded me forward to the kitchen as Jonas backed slowly.

The sirens were close, and I hoped they weren’t going to be too late. I closed my eyes and prayed to any god, goddess, or holy man that would listen.
