“On your knees,” she hollered at Jonas.

“Look at me, Lennox,” he called. “Let me see your eyes.”

I opened my eyes and sniffled. “Just do what she says, Jonas,” I pleaded.

“She’s not going to hurt you. I’m not going to let anything bad happen to you,” he promised.

I nodded my head, but I didn’t know if he was going to be able to keep that promise.

“I love you,” I whispered. If this was going to be the last moments of my life, I needed Jonas to know I loved him more than anything.

“I love you, too, babe. Doc and Marty do, too.”

Doc and Marty. And Hero.

We weren’t alone.

Hero must have called the police, and he was somewhere close.

“Oh, how fucking precious,” Anne cooed. “As soon as I kill you two, I promise Doc and Marty will be close behind.”

Oh, no she didn’t. She was not going to kill Jonas and our boys.

“What about me?”

Hero.

Anne stumbled to the side and swung the gun toward the hallway.

With a burst of agility, Jonas sprang into action. He barreled into Anne, while Hero grabbed me around the waist, and tossed me toward the kitchen.

King grabbed me before my ass hit the floor and shoved me behind him.

A loud gunshot rang as Jonas wrestled with Anne on the floor. He managed to pin her to the floor and kick the gun away.

“Jonas,” I screamed. I didn’t know if he had been shot. I didn’t know anything.

“I’m fine,” he called.

The front door burst open, sending wood splinters flying, and a line of cops fanned out into the common area. Their guns were trained on Anne and Jonas on the floor.

“About fucking time you got here, Ransom,” Hero called. “You guys stop for donuts or something?” Hero wiped his brow him the back of his hand and smiled. “Jonas and I did the hard work for you.”

“I see that.” Ransom moved into the common area with his gun drawn, but at his side. “That gunshot we heard land anywhere?” he asked.

Jonas shook his head. “No.”

I couldn't help but feel a surge of overwhelming relief wash over me. The world seemed to slow down, and my senses sharpened, homing in on the one person who mattered most to me.

At that moment, all the worry, fear, and uncertainty melted away, replaced by an indescribable sense of peace. Every fiber of my being rejoiced as I realized that the man I love was safe, unharmed amidst the chaos that had enveloped us. The tension that had gripped my heart for what felt like an eternity released its hold, allowing the steady rhythm of love and reassurance to take its place.

“You deserve to die!” Anne screamed.

“And you deserve to get some fucking mental help,” Jonas growled. “Your brother was a bad man who murdered Layla. He got what he deserved, and so did I.”

“Move the fuck on, bitch,” Hero called.

The cops grabbed Anne from Jonas and slapped handcuffs on her. “Get her out of here,” Ransom ordered.
