Saint raised a brow. “No matter how good of a job he’s doing, an ancient, sacred artifact has gone missing. We won’t be leaving without answers.”

“You can’t believe all the rumors, Jackson. After all, if we’d listened to what people had said about you, we might not have helped you reunite with your mate,” Bibi reminded him.

“We need the Hudaknocker back,” Saint said. “I don’t care where it is or how it got there. We trusted this team with keeping it safe. We’re spending a lot of money producing this show, writing your paychecks—”

“You’d cancel the show over this?” No. I couldn’t let Bibi, Hugo, and the rest of the team take the hit over my terrible decision.

Saint stepped forward. “We may need to make some changes.”

“Don’t fire Marissa over this,” Bjorn said. “The Hudaknocker will be back at HQ, safe and sound.”

The alphas looked at each other, realizing the bear had just incriminated me. I should have known. After all, it was his signature move. It took everything I had not to scream at himwhat were you thinking?!

“We’ll talk once the Hudaknocker is back where it belongs,” Saint said.

The guys nodded to us and headed out of the mercantile.

“Wait,” I called after them.

All three shifters turned around.

“Have you talked to my mother?”

They exchanged questioning looks and shook their heads.

That was not good. At all.

“She texted me today and said she got a visit from some wolves wanting to know where the Hudaknocker was. That they expected her to tell them, or else.” My heart was pounding. My mom could be in real danger. “I was really hoping it might be one of you, but if it wasn’t…”

“Shit,” Jackson said. “We need to comb the mountains. Make sure trouble hasn’t come back to town.”

Or that my mom didn’t send that trouble an engraved invitation…

“We’ll handle it,” Hugo said, his voice gruff. “We’ll have the Hudaknocker back, safe and sound.”

I put my hand on my forehead. My whole body was shaking so violently I couldn’t believe I made it through that. “I messed up. I need to fix this. Now. Before I alienate every pack in Sunset Springs, someone hurts my mother, or I start a pack war. Or, if today’s my lucky day, all the above.”

“Let’s go get it.” Bjorn took my hand in his, but it did little to stop all those worst-case scenarios from running through my head.

“We’ll all go.” Bibi still had that stern look on her face. Like she’d already talked to Saint about those changes he had in mind for the show. And something told me every one of them had a red line through my name.

Bjorn shook his head. He’d never defied Bibi before. “If we all head out of town together, it will be obvious what we’re doing. I can take her on my bike—”

“Which is at your house, not here,” Bibi reminded him.

“I’ll take yours,” he said.

“You’re not going alone.” Hugo stepped forward. “There are more people watching you than you think.”

That warning sent a shiver down my spine. It gave validity to my mother’s claim that she’d been in contact with mysterious shifters. “How about we go on the bike, and you follow in the van?”

Bibi and Hugo looked at each other.

“Fine,” Bibi said. “Before you go, my bike has the GoPro holders on it. We need to make sure we record every second of this.”

Back at Bibi’s cabin, Hugo and Stephanie worked together to install the GoPros. There would be one on the handlebars and one on each of our helmets. They had to make sure they synced to the security system.

I paced in Bibi’s backyard. I practically felt like there was an animal inside of me, desperate to get out.
