Bjorn sat in one of the lounge chairs but didn’t relax. His body was on point. Legs spread wide, elbows on his thighs, fingertips pressed together. A scowl on his face, like he was deep in thought, probably trying to convince his bear that I wasn’t his mate after all.

And that was even more devastating than what would happen if I couldn’t actually find the Hudaknocker.

“I’m terrified.” I couldn’t stand still. “I thought for sure Saint had gone to talk to my mom. He’s the face of the wolves around here. It made sense. And he’s on our side. But if it wasn’t him, who was it? And what will they do to my mom to get the Hudaknocker?”

“We don’t let them find out.” Bjorn was way too calm. Which was good because one of us had to be.

“I’m worried about my mom. I had her help me hide the damn thing. So if these shifters that Hugo insists are watching us now, were watching us then.” I shook my head. “I can’t even think about it.”

“Then let’s not think about it,” he suggested.

“I don’t have animal instinct, Bjorn. I can’t rely on some unknown source to make me do the right thing.”

He pinned me with his gaze. “Your instincts are much sharper than you give them credit for, and maybe you should start listening to them.”

“What do you want to do on our next date?” he asked when I didn’t say anything. “We’ve both had a chance to pick something, so it’s only fair that we both have a say this time.”

I squeezed my eyes closed, willing this weird, wild feeling to go away. It was completely unfamiliar, but at the same time, it was comforting. Didn’t make it any less creepy.

“I want to see your bear,” I said.

His body stiffened. No. He couldn’t deny me the chance to meet his animal. He’d said it himself. We were mates. But it was possible that his bear wanted to punish me after my latest stunt.

I had a few suggestions for him if he needed any…

“I want—No. I need to know all of you.”

“Have you ever been with a shifter before?”

“I’ve been with you.”

He nodded. “I’m your first?”

Somehow, he managed to make me sound innocent. Not a word that got tossed in my direction often. “I’ve been around plenty of shifters, Bjorn. They’re everywhere in Sunset Springs.”

“It’s different.”

“Show me how.”

His Adam’s apple bobbed. “I haven’t been bear for a while. I was trained to fight for my mate. I might get real possessive around you.”

My lip curled. “I might like that.”

ChapterFifteen

Bjorn

Marissa was in some deep shit, and I wouldn’t let any of these wolves lay a paw on her. As for her mother…if I had to fight for Suzanne, I’d do it to claim my mate.

But I hoped it didn’t come to that.

Bibi came into the backyard, her gaze moving between Marissa and me. The tension between us was delicious but dangerous. My mate was a live wire. She wasn’t as ready to claim me as I was her.

But by the time this was over and the relic was safely in that museum, Marissa would have no doubt she belonged to me.

I should probably be way more pissed off that Marissa was so convinced the Hudaknocker was responsible for her feelings for me that she would go to such lengths to get rid of it. She was lucky that Bibi hadn’t canceled our episode. Fired her ass. That Saint, Jackson, and Gabe had been gracious enough to let her off with a warning.

They were giving my little human one last chance to prove herself. And I’d make sure she didn’t let them down.
