“Well, I remember when I used to beg her to take me to your Misdirection concerts, she would wear all the fan merch. She’d belt out the lyrics louder than anyone standing near us. I remember one time shecriedand…” he trails off, as though realising the reason why.

His face falls, and I can feel mine mirroring his.

“I get it now. Why she cried.” He turns in his seat, facing forward once more to slide his phone from his pocket. “I made fun of her for crying, but she was crying because she missed you. And Imade hertake me.”

He opens his text messages, and I can see him start a new one for Summer. I pat his knee, squeezing gently before facing forward myself.

My head and my heart were already in complete conflict, but that right there—that had the scales tipping in favour of my heart.

Yeah, I’d thought she’d left me. But she’d only been able to watch from afar, fearful of reaching out for any number of reasons, and when shehad, she’d been turned away.

I can only imagine how difficult it would be to watch the person you love seemingly make a life without you while you watched on, helpless to change things. The fact she’d brought Jesse to my concerts and had willingly put herself through that turmoil…

No! Stop that, dumb heart.

I close my eyes and take a deep breath while I forcibly shove all thoughts of Summer St James from my damn mind. When I recentre myself, I grab my own phone and type out an email to my old P.I. Larry.

Larry,

Thank you for your recent update on the elusive Miss St James.

I wanted to touch base with you regarding some questions I have about your investigation into finding her over the years.

It has come to my attention that our mutual friend, Noah Spellman, had a hand in sending her away. Obviously, this is very much a he-said/she-said situation, and I’m hoping you can be my tiebreaker.

Can you confirm that Mr Spellman had nothing to do with Miss St James’s disappearance?

I’m aware this puts you in a predicament. However, you can be assured of my discretion in this matter.

As always, thank you for your help.

Regards,

Caden North

I hit send, and a reply pops up instantaneously as my phone beeps an alert.

Swiping the screen, I tap on the email and quickly skim the contents.

I am currently out of the office and will reply upon my return.

Best,

Larry

My forehead creases.

Shit!

Just as I’m about to lock my screen, a text message pops up in my notifications. I tap it with my thumb, and my whole body thrums with nervous energy as I slowly turn towards Jesse.
