I swipe the email away and dial Vaughn as I try to get a handle on my panic. He answers on the first ring.
“Have you spoken to anyone else yet?”
I huff impatiently. “Look, fucker. I’ve just woken up after a busy-ass evening. I don’t have time—”
“I have it on good authority that there’s another shitstorm coming for you, DeMarco. Another woman out for a payday…” He gives me a second to digest what he’s said, as though it’s not a knife to the gut.
But it’s his next words that twist that knife, bringing me to my knees in the middle of my ensuite.
“This one is seven months pregnant. And a paternity test says that you’re the father.”

There’s ringingin my ears, and the white tiles of my bathroom seem to go in and out of focus. My breathing comes in short bursts, and I manage to verbalize my wild thoughts.
“I can’t…” I inhale a shaky breath. “I can’t…”
I desperately inhale through my nostrils, but still, my lungs feel oxygen deprived. “I can’t lose her.”
My breath catches in my throat.
