I deeply inhale her sweet floral fragrance until my senses are swimming in everything Reyna DeMarco, and I press a soft kiss to her forehead as I whisper with a grateful heart, “I’ve got you, Sunshine.”

REYNA

Seeing the authorities cuff Victor is one of the most empowering moments of my entire life, and I gently place my arm around Iris’s shoulder as together we watch him be taken away.

Forever!

The evidence from the mic is irrefutable, and it’s safe to say, Victor Marquez will die behind bars.

“It’s nothing less than he deserves.”

I don’t realize I’ve spoken the words aloud until Iris catches my hand and gently squeezes it in her own small one.

“I can hardly believe it.” Her eyes widen with incredulity. “We’re free, Reyna.”

She turns to little Dean, who’s propped on the top of her bump. “We’re safe now, sweetheart.”

His smile is heart-stoppingly similar to Lita’s, and my chest constricts as Dean burrows his face against his mother’s neck.

Iris slides her arm around my waist, pulling me in closer to them, and we share a small smile of solidarity.

Alex finishes his conversation with one of the detectives as his cell rings, and he steps away to answer it. His face lights up, and he lifts his gaze to me and Iris as he closes the distance.

“Iris, I have someone special who needs to talk to you.”

He passes over his cell, and Iris accepts it, placing it to her ear. Her face transforms as she cries out, “Aidan! Oh my God, baby. It’s over, he’sgone!”

Alex laces his fingers through mine, tugging me away to give Iris and her little family some privacy. I press my shoulder to his, looking up at him with a grateful smile.

“Thank you for that.”

He smiles lopsidedly with a shrug. “I reckoned if I were in her shoes, I’d give just about anything to talk to my person. To get to you.”

It’s his turn to press his shoulder to mine, his smile widening, sending butterflies soaring in my stomach as I’m filled from head to toe with pure, unadulterated love for this beautiful man.

“I’d walk through Hell to get to you, Sunshine.”

He bops me on the nose with his index finger, and I melt at his next words.

“With a smile on my damn face, knowing that what’s awaiting me is my very favorite place to be.”

CHAPTER35

ALEX

It’s laterthan I’d like by the time we return home. The interviews and paperwork had taken far longer than I’d hoped, and Rey had insisted upon ensuring that Iris and her son were housed at a hotel in the city to await Aidan’s hospital discharge, rather than the home that had been tainted by a madman.

Ford drops us off, opening the door for Rey with a gentle smile that sees her stop to draw him into her embrace.

“Thank you for everything, Ford. You’ve been…” She draws back to look right at him. “You’re always welcome in our home.”

Ford’s brows pull together, and his throat works harder to swallow as he palms my wife’s face with a soft smile. “I appreciate that more than y’all know.”

I can’t help but grin at the slip of the accent he hides daily before it’s my turn.

“Thank you. For everything…and…what she said.”
