Silence follows until Alex drops his arm around my shoulder, tugging me against his side before pressing a fleeting kiss to my temple. “I trust you, too, Sunshine.”

I look up to catch his eyes and smile brightly. “Your turn, pretty boy! Best trait?”

When he places his arm on the back of the couch, I feel his loss immediately, despite telling my wayward heart to get a grip.

“My best trait has to be my charm. The gossip rags say that it’s the most memorable thing about me.”

He huffs a self-deprecatory laugh as my brow furrows. “I thought we needed to be honest.”

Alex instantly stops laughing while a confused look overtakes his handsome face. “Iambeing honest, Rey.”

“No. You’re telling me what other people think is your most memorable trait.” I hold his gaze firmly. “I asked what is your best trait?Yourbest. Not what anyone else thinks.”

His face creases in thought, and he chuckles low before taking emptying his glass. “I’m decisive. Does that suit?”

I nod, placated for now. “And your favorite thing about yourself?”

He doesn’t miss a beat.

“My monster cock, obviously.”

I throw my head back, laughing uproariously as he continues. “As my girlfriend, Henry will expect you to know all about my perfect penis. He’s an authority on the appendage, considering he was the one who used to change my nappies.”

I sober enough to ask, “What on earth are nappies?”

“Shit, sometimes I forget I’m Stateside. I meantdiapers.”

I nod even as I continue to chuckle at what seems to be his cheekiness. “I’msureyour brother won’t ask me about our bedroom activities, no?”

Alex laughs even harder. “Oh, sweet baby Jesus. Henry has precisely zero fucks to give.” Dawning horror makes my eyes widen. “There arenolines he’s not willing to cross. Inanyaspect of his life. We need to sell ithardtomorrow, Sunshine.”

“Just when I was feeling okay about meeting him!”

He chuckles. “You’ll do just fine, Rey. He’ll love you.”

I smile back before he takes his turn. “Do you want a big family?”

My eyes blow wide as I nod excessively. “Yes! Being an only child was lonely. I want a house full of kids.

He chuckles even as he shakes his head indulgently. The idea of a mini-Alex running around does strange things to my insides, and I can’t help wanting to know his own thoughts on the matter.

“And what about you?”

He snorts a laugh. “Not a damn hope.”

My chest tightens as he continues. “There’s not a hope I’d inflict my messed-up genes on another generation.” He holds my eyes with a small smile. “But your kids would be pretty damn perfect.”

Alex brushes the back of his knuckles across my cheek, and I can feel them blush at the contact, so I pull back enough to take another sip of my wine.

“How many sexual partners have you had?”

The wine goes down the wrong way, and I begin to choke.

Alex pats my back gently while my mind flounders on what to say. Once I’ve gotten myself under control, my gaze finds his. “You okay?”

I nod, pressing my lips upwards in a semblance of a smile.

He looks even more interested now, and I just want the ground to open up and swallow me whole as I utter. “Less than yours, apparently.”
