And Jesse started a different round of kisses.

Right in the center of her body.

Hanna nearly climaxed then and there at the touch of his mouth on such a sensitive spot. She couldn’t remember ever having sensations this intense. And maybe she never had. But she suspected it’d happened with Jesse a year and a half ago when they’d landed in bed.

“More,” she heard herself murmur. “I want you naked now.”

Jesse obliged her. Well, he did after giving her a few more of those well-placed, mind-blowing kisses. He stood and retrieved the condom from his wallet before he shoved his jeans and boxers down over his hips.

Hanna silently cursed the nearly dark room, and she wished she had more than the night-light so she could take a better look at him. But what she could see confirmed that Jesse was indeed a hot cowboy, both clothed and naked.

He settled back on the lounger and robbed Hanna of her breath while he got the condom on. The lounger wasn’t wide or especially suited for having sex, but they were past the point of needing comfort. They only needed each other.

And Jesse gave her exactly that.

He was gentle when he pushed inside her. Obviously holding back so he didn’t hurt her. But Hanna tried to rid him of any doubts about that when she hooked her legs around his back and lifted her hips. The leash inside snapped again and he started the hard thrusts that would eventually give her the pleasure and relief from the pressure-cooker heat building inside her.

She heard him whisper her name, felt his warm breath on her neck when he repeated it. And that was the final piece she needed to feel herself go over the edge. She buried her face against him and let go.

Moments later, Jesse followed her.

Chapter Fourteen

Jesse held Hanna while she thankfully got some sleep. Apparently, good sex was a cure for frayed nerves. A temporary cure anyway. The calm certainly wouldn’t last, but he’d hang on to it as long as he could. Every peaceful moment he could give her was a gift. Unfortunately, it was probably also the calm before the storm.

Once Grayson had the plan set in motion, there was no telling what would happen, and it might be a long time before they had any kind of peace and quiet again. A long time, too, before he could be sure that Hanna and Evan were safe.

Across the room, he could hear the soft sounds of Evan’s breathing, and it occurred to him that many parents probably had this. Great sex and the comfort of being with their child. Of course, most probably didn’t go for that great sex in the nursery, but his son was none the wiser, and it almost certainly lessened the tension for them to be so close to him.

Hanna would no doubt have second thoughts about what they’d just done. Might even worry about another unplanned pregnancy. But for now she would have these moments, and it appeared she had fallen into a deep, restful sleep. She wasn’t shifting or muttering from nightmares despite the cramped space on the lounger, so Jesse stayed still, too, despite the urgency building inside him to keep digging into the investigation. He could be only one piece of evidence away from finding out who’d been responsible for all this misery and havoc.

His phone dinged with a text, and even though it was a soft sound, it blared out like a security alarm in the otherwise quiet room. Hanna woke with a jolt, jackknifing in the lounger, and she seemed ready to jump into the middle of a fierce battle. She settled down, though, when her eyes met his and leveled out even more when she glanced at Evan and saw that he was okay.

“It’s Grayson,” Jesse told her, and he showed Hanna the message that had just arrived.

Everything’s set up. But it’s possible word is already out that we have Bull here. Nelda Baker was apparently looking out her window when we drove by her place, and she saw Bull in the cruiser. I didn’t spot her at the time or I would have told her to keep quiet. Too late now. The cat’s out of the bag because a couple of minutes ago, I got a phone call from Nelda’s son asking if it was true, if we had actually arrested Bull.

Hell. Nelda was a notorious gossip and had likely let plenty of people know. Of course, even once the word got back to the militia and their leader, they would still have to come up with their own plan of attack. It was even possible that such an assault wouldn’t involve thugs trying to storm the building. They could try to get to Bull by some other means, maybe by finding something or someone they could use to silence him.

Or maybe they’d already gone on the run, believing they were all about to be arrested.

That wasn’t a best case scenario as far as Jesse was concerned. If this snake pit went underground, then heaven knew how long it would take to round them all up again. And Jesse doubted they wouldn’t take the “go and sin no more” route. Not a chance. They would just set up their illegal operation somewhere else, bide their time and then come after them once they let down their guards. That meant Hanna, Evan, and no one in Jesse’s family would be safe.

As much as the idea of a showdown sickened him, he was afraid it was going to come to that. Either now or later. Jesse preferred to save his “later” for getting on with life, and the only way that could happen was for them to neutralize this very large, very dangerous, threat.

“So, the militia’s had...what?” Hanna stopped and checked the time. “Over an hour to prepare?”

“Probably,” he verified because it had been nearly two hours since Grayson had left.

Even if Nelda had inadvertently informed a militia member with her gossip, it still would have taken some time to get back to the leader. Jesse didn’t get the feeling that most members actually knew who the leader was. If so, that would have likely come out with all the arrests that had been made shortly after Hanna’s shooting. That would have been powerful bargaining info for anyone looking for a plea deal.

It was a smart move for the leader to act more as a silent partner. A partner who no doubt had raked in big profits from all the illegal activities while keeping his or her identity under wraps.

Jesse sent back a quickThanks for the updatereply to Grayson and looked at Hanna to give her a quick kiss before he got up and started putting his clothes back on. His body was suggesting a whole lot more than a mere kiss though. It was pushing for another round of sex, but he didn’t have a second condom. Plus, with the plan to lure out the militia leader now in motion, he needed to be focusing on that.

Hanna groaned softly when she glanced down at her naked body partly covered by a throw Jesse had gotten from a basket on the floor. The groan was likely because her right breast was exposed, giving him more of those “another round” thoughts.

She pulled the cover over it but gave him the quick kiss that he’d been fantasizing about. He wasn’t stupid. He knew a kiss wasn’t an announcement from her that all was right between them, but it was a good start.
