Anthony grunted. “Then they’re likely to have some sort of record.”

“Which Moderno would no doubt have already accessed.”

“Probably, but he hasn’t got the Lantern’s access to trackers. If your psychologist is out there, we’ll find her.”

“I still don’t see how it’s going to help their situation. My father has already admitted his guilt.”

“Only because your mother’s testimony left him with no other choice. Claiming Clayton broke their agreement while proving your memories are unreliable is merely a means of lessening the sentence.”

I snorted. “Do you still really believe that his penalty will be more than a slap on the wrist?”

“I certainly do, young lady.”

“Why?”

“Because I have faith in the system.” He collected his satchel and swung it over his shoulder. “Do you want to grab some lunch while we wait for court to resume?”

“Sure.”

“This way then.”

He turned and led the way out. I was three steps behind him when invisible fingers ran down my arm and clasped my fingers.

I stopped cold.

Move, the ghost whispered urgently. He comes for Juli.

Juli. Not Julius. Juli. The ghost had known my brother. Very few people outside the inner Marlowe circle called my brother that. So who, if not my sister?

“Anthony,” I said. “We have a problem.”

He swung around. “What?”

“My brother is in danger. We need to get to him—now.”

“No, we need to remain here. Besides, he’s very well guarded. No one will—”

“We’re talking about a dark sorcerer returned to this world in the form of a wraith. Trust me when I say that he will.”

He hesitated and then dug out his phone. “I’ll call Samuel. He can get extra people there.”

It will not help, my ghost said. He is already in the wraith’s possession. He will die if you do not come now.

I swore and scrubbed a hand through my hair. “Anthony, I’m going. Explain the situation to the bench and contact my father once you’ve made that call.”

“Elizabeth, you cannot afford—”

I didn’t hear the rest of it. I was already out the door.

As the ghost tugged me down the steps, I dug out my phone and called Saska.

“I take it there’s a problem?” she said by way of hello.

“The wraith has my brother.”

“Impossible. I would have been notified—”

“Impossible or not, it has happened.”
