“And you know this how? A vision?”

“No, my ghost.”

“Are you sure this ghost isn’t working for the opposition?”

“She hasn’t led me astray so far.”

“Doesn’t mean she’s not lulling you into a false sense of security.”

“She’s not. I’d bet my life on it.”

“And you may well be. I’ll be out the front in five minutes. Don’t go anywhere without me.”

The ghost’s impatience washed over me, a wave so fierce it momentarily stole my breath. “Damn it, just stop. I’m not going to run into an unknown situation unarmed and alone.”

You are not unarmed came the whispered response. And you are certainly not without power. Not these days.

Suggesting my ghost was aware of my ability to use the wild magic. Either she’d witnessed me using it or she wasn’t a ghost but rather something else. But what?

“I can’t use that magic against darkness,” I replied. “I can’t risk the possibility of staining the wellsprings.”

You cannot stain what you are not in contact with came her reply. What lies within you might have bloomed thanks to the presence of that unrestrained wellspring, but it nevertheless stands apart.

“And you know this how?”

I’m not a ghost but a spirit guide. I’m able to access knowledge both past and present.

My head snapped toward her. “I don’t have a spirit guide.”

I didn’t want a spirit guide.

Her laughter ran across my senses, warm and oddly familiar. It was a sound from my past, a sound I’d heard multiple times.

No, I thought. Impossible.

I am not your guide, she said. In fact, I doubt there is a guide in existence who’d truly want the task. You have something of a reputation in the spirit world.

Thanks no doubt to Belle’s wretched guides.

Don’t you be cussing them out when they have no chance of reply came Belle’s amused comment.

It’s nothing but the truth.

Perhaps, but why the sudden realization they chat about you behind your back?

My ghost claims to be a spirit guide.

Interesting. I’ll see what I can uncover. Has she said her name?

No.

So ask her.

I hesitated, though I wasn’t entirely sure why. I needed to know who this spirit was, if only to understand why she was helping us. And yet there was not only a deepening reluctance to take that step but also a growing suspicion that by doing so my world might be turned on its axis.

I stopped near the curb. Saska wasn’t yet in sight, so I drew in a deep breath and said, “If you are not my spirit guide then why are you helping me and my family?”

Have you not guessed yet? came the amused reply.
