“I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed anyone yelling at a comatose patient before. Looks like it didn’t do the trick.” My head turns so fast at the sound of an unfamiliar voice just as he throws a cocky wink my way. I have no idea who this is and didn’t hear anyone come into the room after Cassie and Zeke left.

The man moves to the other side of Gabe’s bed looking concerned and checking the monitors for any sign of change, which throws me for a loop. He’s wearing boots, blue jeans and a t-shirt. He’s definitely not a doctor or a medical professional of any sort.

“Who are you? And why are you here?” I ask suspiciously. The man ignores my question, grabs the chart off the wall, and begins flipping through the pages. He must see something that interests him because he slams the chart shut and tosses it on the counter.

Scooting forward I try to reach the call button for the nurse, but it’s on the other side of the bed where the man is standing. How did he get in here? I thought Cassie and Zeke were standing close by. Surely, they wouldn’t let anyone in here that wasn’t supposed to be.

He reaches into his pocket, pulling out a syringe, as a devious grin spreads across his face as he meets my gaze. “Now would be the time to say your goodbye, sweet cheeks.”

I spring forward, trying to hit the button, but his reflexes are lightning quick. He hits me in the head, knocking me to the side of the bed. Pain fills me instantly as I try to lift myself off of Gabriel but end up on my ass on the floor.

I’m still weak from the surgery, but the blow to the head has my knees wobbly and the room spinning. It’s hard to get my bearings, but the moment I look up I see him inserting the needle into Gabe’s IV. I scream at the top of my lungs for help, but it’s too late. Whatever was in the needle is now swimming through Gabe’s veins.

I continue to yell as the machines start going crazy. A nurse rushes in scanning the room. The man rushes past her, shoving her against the counter on his way out.

Using all my strength, I pull myself up and rip the IV from Gabe’s arm, even though I know the damage is done. Zeke and Cassie run into the room, wondering what all the commotion is about.

Zeke looks at me wide-eyed, stunned by what he’s seeing. “There was a guy who just injected him with something and took off. Go get him!” I choke out before collapsing on top of Gabriel.

It feels like time slows down at that moment. Everything happens at once. Cassie rushes over helping me up while the nurse starts working on Gabriel whose vitals are crashing.

Zeke yells out to Cassie, telling her to call her brother then turns to run out of the room crashing into Dante. Dante starts yelling, but Zeke takes off in search of the intruder.

The room spins and the last thing I remember is my knees going weak and falling to the ground as Cassie tries to hold me steady.

Chapter 10

Dante

Royalgetsofftheelevator on Angel’s floor. He’s going to check in with her and the guys while I get an update on Gabriel. The Sons have made it abundantly clear how they feel about me hanging out with the Reapers. I was honestly surprised to get the call from Zeke asking me to come to the hospital.

Every time we’ve spoken on the phone he’s been short with me. It’s no secret that the guys and I grew up together and I’ve always considered them my closest friends.

Gabriel tried to break that bond over the past two years, but the moment I saw Angel and the guys I knew things would eventually get back on track. I had done plenty of damage to our relationship when I ghosted them without an explanation.

Lies and secrets are the death of everything good in my life. It’s the cancer to my soul, eating away the good and leaving destruction in its path. There’s so much destruction everywhere I look, it’s hard to find a trail leading back to my happiness. The memories of my mother and my childhood are now tainted. Any future I thought to be possible with Angel is now gone.

I step onto the floor as the elevator opens, nurses looking panicked rush by me as I make my way to Gabriel. Noticing the nurses are disappearing into his room, I take off into a sprint. Pushing the door open, the sight before me has my eyes almost popping out of my head.

Zeke rushes by me in a haste. “What the fuck is going on?” I call out but he doesn’t stop to answer me. He keeps running out the door until he’s out of sight. I whip my head around to see Angel falling from Cassie’s arm.

Rushing to Angel’s side, my chest is heavy with fear while I’m feeling completely lost as to what’s going on. “What happened?” I ask. Cassie looks at me like a deer caught in headlights. Her body is tense, with her jaw clenched and still cradling Angel in her arms. Without a word, she shrugs her shoulders like she doesn’t have a clue either.

“Mr. Garcia, there was a man in here that went running out. I didn’t see what happened, but that woman suggested that he had injected your father with something. But we aren’t sure what it was as there is no evidence left behind.” The nurse chimes in while she continues working on Gabriel. She presses the nurse call button, requesting help. Just as the nurses and doctor file into the room, the nurse yells out. “Get the crash cart. Sir, we need y’all out so we have room to work.”

My heart is pounding as I gather Angel in my arms and carry her out of the room. Cassie follows behind me, yelling out for help. Another nurse comes over and checks Angel out when she starts to come to.

“She needs to go back to her room immediately. I’ll call her floor’s nurses’ station and let them know to do an examination once she arrives.”

“I don’t understand. What exactly happened here?” I ask the nurse who looks extremely frustrated.

“Why don’t you ask your friend here, since she is the only one who was in the room when it happened? Now, please take her back upstairs before you all risk any of our other patients' lives.” She storms off behind the desk, picking up the phone.

Someone needs a lesson in common decency. That woman’s people skills are seriously lacking.

I look at Cassie who deeply sighs before shaking her head then pushes Angel toward the elevator.

“Is Gabe okay?” Angel whispers.
