My mind is racing and I’m having second thoughts about leaving Gabriel alone. Where are all the Sons who are supposed to be watching over him?

Without another thought, I turn to leave before the doors close behind us. Just as I step away, Angel grabs hold of my arm. “Get us back to my room, then come back. I don’t want him left alone either,” she says, leaving no room for argument.

The door shuts, and the decision is made. I’ll be escorting them to Angel’s hospital room, but at least this will give me time to find out what went down before I got there. Before I have the chance to start questioning, Angel fills in the blanks for us.

“A man entered the room while I was talking to Gabe. I’ve never seen him before, so I don’t think he is a member of either club. He checked Gabe’s chart then pulled out a needle.” Her breathing becomes heavy and rapid as she continues.

“I was too late. I tried to stop him, but he hit me in the head and injected him with something, and that’s when he started crashing. The guy took off before Cassie and Zeke got back to the room. Why the fuck is Zeke the only person guarding him? For fuck’s sake, we were just shot and the President of the Sons has one damn person protecting him? Whose dumbass decision was that?”

She’s absolutely right, and I plan on getting answers to that question myself. Nothing about this makes sense. My hand instinctively goes to her head. “Are you alright? Where did he hit you?” I ask, inspecting her before spotting the discoloring setting in. Fuck! As if she hasn’t been through enough, now she’s getting attacked by another unknown person. I pray to God Zeke catches him before he can get away.

“I’m sorry he hurt you, Heaven."

Angel looks up at me as I let her nickname slip from my tongue. Her eyes beaming with hope. I lean down and kiss the side of her head where she was hit. My heart hurts as I pull away from her. That’s the thing about hope. It’s a pipe dream, a fool’s paradise. I don’t have the luxury of those things in my life.

Angel reaches for me, but I step out of reach. Her chest deflates and the light in her eyes is replaced with a desperation that I hate seeing. Something I have no desire to soothe away. There’s an ache in my bones from denying her and myself. But until my mind is right, I can’t make the mistake of doing something that I may regret later.

Luckily for me, the elevator opens and Cassie pushes Angel toward her room. Opening the door for them to enter, I see Jax, Lucky and Royal casually lounging around the room. Royal jumps off the counter to greet Angel with a kiss, making my stomach turn, but I can’t help but stare at the two of them.

Backing away, I turn to leave. I have no desire to watch this. It feels like someone is taking a knife to my heart as it is. I don’t need this shit right now.

“Where are you going?” Lucky asks, ignoring the fact that Royal and Angel are making out like two horny teenagers. I can’t stomach it and need to get back to Gabe anyway.

“Angel can fill you in when she’s finished fucking Royal’s face with her tongue. I’m out.”

I make a bee-line straight for the stairs, not wanting to wait any longer to get back to Gabe. What I don’t notice is Jax following behind me. He scares the shit out of me when he grabs my shoulder from behind, telling me to slow the fuck down.

Jerking back, I stop staring him down. “Man, why are you following me? You know they don’t want you anywhere near Gabriel.”

“You looked like you were ready to kill someone the way you stormed out of the room, and I just wanted to check on you. Is that a crime?”

Rolling my eyes at him, I turn back around, ignoring him to finish my climb up to the next floor. We walk in peaceful silence until we step into Gabriel’s room to find it empty. Shell-shocked, I stagger back bumping into Jax who catches me before I fall on my ass. I spin around, storming off to the nurses’ station.

“Gabriel Garcia, where is he? I was only gone a few minutes and now his room is empty,” I ask, slamming my hands against the counter causing it to rattle.

“I’m sorry there was no one here to claim the body, so he was moved downstairs. Let me call the doctor for you,” she responds.

To claim the body? What body? They were working on him when I left. Nothing happens that fast. Something isn’t right.

It feels like the walls are closing in on me when Jax grabs my arm pulling me away from the desk.

“Something is going on here. We need to get Angel and get the fuck out of this hospital. Now!” Jax looks from left to right then nudges me in the stomach to get my attention just as a man walks by casually. He looks like any other visitor until I notice the gun in his waistband. It’s almost hidden by his jacket, but it’s definitely there. The man walks past us not making eye contact but passes another guy nodding in acknowledgment.

“They’re both strapped. Let’s go,” Jax whispers in a low voice for only my ears. We inconspicuously make our way to the stairs, then take off in a sprint to get to Angel and the guys.

Where the fuck are Gabriel and the Sons who are supposed to be protecting him? There are so many questions flying through my mind right now I can’t even think straight.

“Do you think it's King? Or someone else?” Jax asks breathlessly as we take the stairs two at a time. The door opens and closes above us. We look at each other bug eyed while Jax holds up a finger to his lips, shushing me. We keep moving, making our way down the stairs. All the while, the other set of footsteps start to quicken, closing in on us.

We reach the door, but Jax hesitates with his hand hovering over the handle. His hand moves to his waist, pulling out his gun while using his free hand to shove me behind him. He must think I’m not packing, but he’s wrong. I grab my gun and wait for the person trailing us to come into my line of sight.

The man pounces down the stairs, hitting the corner of the stairwell to descend on us, one hand holding the rail and a gun in the other.

The moment the guy lifts his head, the two of us don’t falter in raising our weapons, aiming, then shooting. It’s kill or be killed out here, and we aren’t going out that easily.

The sounds from the guns going off ring through the air. The enclosed area makes the bang vibrate and echo all around us. Two shots to the chest cause the man to fall back against the wall before letting his weapon slip from his fingers. He slides to the ground, his hand clutching his blood filled shirt.

I move to check on the guy, but the sound of another door opening has me pausing. My head turns to Jax, who’s now behind me, shaking his head, then moving to the door. I follow behind him, making our way to Angel’s room.
