Nodding my head toward the closet, we hurry over and shut the doors behind us. My ear is pressed against the door to listen for movement outside the door, but it’s hard to hear over my pounding heart.

Gripping the gun tightly in my hands, I lean back against the wall beside Cassie. I cock the hammer back, ready to unload on our intruder, and try to steady my breathing.

You can do this, Angel. I tell myself.

The sound of glass shattering hits our ears. They are in the house. Cassie tenses up beside me as I close my eyes and say a prayer of protection over us.

We hear movements through the house. They are searching every inch of the house.

“I won’t let anything happen to you, Cass,” I whisper.

“I know,” she replies, her voice trembling in fear.

The knob to the bedroom jiggles then stops. My back stiffens as someone kicks in the door to the room. The bang vibrates the closet walls around us.

I aim with the gun held firmly in my hand. The closet door flies open as I pull the trigger once then twice, putting two bullets directly in the man’s chest. He falls to the ground as I jump to my feet.

“Stay down!” I yell out to Cassie as I move into the room. I peek around the door and spot another man in the hall. He sees me before I have time to get out of the way and fires off a shot before I have time to move. The bullet hits the doorframe right above my head.

Lifting my gun, I start shooting, hitting the guy in the leg. The next bullet goes wide, but my last shot hits him in the shoulder, dropping him. I make my way down the hall with one bullet left in my mag.

Turning the corner, another assailant rushes me, knocking the gun from my hands. He throws me against the wall, wrapping his fingers around my throat and cutting off my air supply.

Breathlessly, I claw and kick, trying to fight him off, but he’s relentless. The hand around my neck squeezes tighter making my body go numb and my head spin. I hear the shot go off before falling to the ground in a coughing fit, trying to catch my breath.

I look up to see Cassie holding the gun in her hand, staring down at the dead man beside me.
