My stomach drops and I clench my fists tightly at my side to keep from clocking this dude. I glance over my shoulder, leveling him with a vicious glare.

“Fuck me, I don’t even wanna know, Cass. This guy isn’t your friend. You don’t even know him.”

“Maybe I do, maybe I don’t. Either way, you need to stay in your lane, Luck,” she spouts off.

I run my hand through my hair, gripping it tight at the roots. My face scrunches up wondering how my little sister became ‘friends’ with an officer from the Sons of Diablo. “You’re just a kid, Cass. I don’t want you anywhere near him or this life. Do you understand me?”

“Yeah, well, it’s a little too late for that. You should have thought about that before you sent these two goons to look after me.” She spins on her heels and stomps off down the hallway.

Like I said, curiosity killed the cat.

Zeke pushes off the wall as if he’s about to chase after her, but Sinner and Shadow shove a hand in his chest and use their bodies as a blockade. “Take another step towards her and I’ll end you right here, right now,” Shadow growls.

Fuck my life. Did I make a big mistake sending those two to look after Cassie while we were away?

At that moment, it seemed like the right thing to do. I needed to know she was safe. What better men to do that than the scariest fuckers I know?

No, they wouldn’t dare touch Cassie. Would they?

I walk over, clasping Sinner on the shoulder to express my gratitude, but he just looks at me like I’m crazy for touching him.

“Thanks for looking out for Cass. I’m glad I can count on the two of you to protect her like you would your own family.” Zeke starts to belly laugh as he heads down the hall toward the waiting room.

“Ha! I’ve never wanted to fuck my family,” Zeke says sarcastically before disappearing around the corner. My eyes go wild between the two men. I will never let any member of a club look at my baby sister in a romantic way, especially these two. The thought of either of them being with Cassie sends chills down my spine.

“For the record, I will cut both your balls off and feed them to you if you ever think about Cassie like that. She’s just a kid,” I declare in the strongest voice I can muster up as I stalk off to find my baby sister.

“Remember who trained me, boys!” I shout over my shoulder.

Searching the halls for Cassie, I come up short. Instead, I find Royal hidden behind a door in the hospital's stairwell, his face buried in his hands. I’m frozen on the other side of the doorway, contemplating what to do. Royal hates being emotional, especially around others. He acts as if it's a sign of weakness, but I can’t leave him here by himself knowing he’s hurting.

I turn the handle and step into the stairwell, taking a seat beside him. He doesn’t look up or make a move to get away. Wrapping my arm around him, I give his shoulder a squeeze to let him know I’m here.

“She has to make it through this,” he sobs, his words faltering. “I can’t live without her–I won’t. I’ll never forgive myself for putting her in danger. I won’t be able to forgive any of us. Ever.”

“She’s going to pull through and then kick all our asses for putting her in the middle of this war. She’s a fighter, Royal. Angel will not go down that easy. She’ll come out swinging and you know that.” I pray that my words are true. I’ve never lived in a world without Angel and I hope I never have to.

“You aren’t blind, Luck. We may not have seen how bad off she was but we both saw the blood covering Dante. Hell, he’s so scared he won’t even talk to us.” His words ring through the dead silence of the stairwell.

“We don’t know if that was Gabriel’s or Angel’s blood, so don’t get ahead of yourself. They’re both in bad shape, that’s all we know, but we can’t give up hope. If the roles were reversed, she would never give up on us.” It’s true, Angel was always by our side taking care of us whenever we were hurt or injured, so that’s what we will do for her. It’s our turn to be by her side when she needs us the most.

My phone buzzes in my pocket, and I pull it out to find a text from my mom.

Mom:

Where are you? The nurse just came in and said the doctor will be out shortly to give us an update.

Me:

On our way.

Royal stands up, wiping his cheeks as I show him the message from my mom. He clears his throat, straightening his shoulders, with a look of determination on his face. “Let’s go get our girl.”

The room is quiet, considering how many people are here. Brenda is seated in a chair with Mom and Jax sitting next to her. Dante’s standing across from Brenda at the doctor’s side, who’s staring down at Brenda with sympathy beaming in his eyes. The realness of the situation sets in as my chest constricts, making it hard to breathe.

“Ms. Somers, your daughter is out of surgery and being taken to the ICU wing as we speak.” I release the breath I didn’t know I was holding and feel the air reenter my lungs.

“What about my dad?” Dante’s thick voice interrupts before the doctor can continue. “Did my dad make it?”
