Gabe’s eyes roam over me. “You don’t look so good, sweetheart.”

My chest heaves for air as I spin on my heels to leave the room, but the world tilts sideways as I crash to the ground.

“Fuck!” Dante shouts just before my vision goes dark.

Chapter six

Angel

Shallow voices fill my ears.

“What do you mean she blacked out?” Cassie shouts.

“Just what I said, Cass,” Dante responds.

“What did you do now? She was perfectly fine when I left the house.”

“Fine? Don’t think that’s necessarily true, but if that’s what you wanna call it. Sure, she was fine.”

I slowly open my eyes, feeling groggy and disoriented.

As my vision comes into focus, I realize that I’m lying in a hospital bed. My heart races as I try to piece together how I ended up here.

As I look around the room, I see Cassie, Dante, and Jaxon standing around me, arguing. Cassie’s face is etched with worry, Dante’s with guilt, and Jaxon’s with anger.

“Miss Somers, so happy you are back with us. I’m going to grab the doctor so he can check you out,” the nurse says as she backs away and heads for the door.

My head’s pounding, and my throat is dry as I try to speak. “What the hell happened?” I ask weakly, my voice barely above a whisper.

Cassie gives Dante a look that sends a chill down my spine.

She’s pissed.

The three of them rush to my side. “Dante and you were visiting Gabe in the hospital, and suddenly you just collapsed,” she explains, her voice trembling.

My mind is a blur as I try to remember what happened. I vaguely remember Gabriel hooked up to all those machines.

Then it hits me.

They were arguing. Over me. Again.

“You’ve been out for a while,” Jax chimes in, his voice accusing as he glares at Dante.

“Apparently a couple hours! And this asshole,” Cassie shoves her finger in Dante’s chest, “couldn’t bother to let us know until a few minutes ago.” She flips him off.

I glance up at him, and he throws a cocky wink my way, trying to lighten the mood, but immediately drops his head after taking me in.

“I’m sorry, okay,” he says, his voice barely audible. “I didn’t know what to do. I was scared. Gabe had just pointed out that maybe she was better off without us.” He looks at Jax with sorrow in his eyes. “I guess I wanted to prove him wrong and take care of her myself.”

“That’s pretty fucking stupid! Since when do you give a shit what he has to say?” Jax shouts.

I can see the guilt written all over Dante’s face and feel a twinge of sympathy for him.

Dante has always been the one to wear his heart on his sleeve in our group, and seeing him like this brings back all the memories I locked away when he left us.

“It’s okay, D,” I reply, reaching my arm out to him.

“No the fuck it’s not,” Jaxon snarls in response.
