Page 20 of Reckless Love

Cassie and Jax look like they are ready to go a few rounds with Dante, and I don’t have the energy for this.

Cassie glares at Dante, who doesn’t shy away as she starts to lay into him.

“It wasn’t like we aren’t all in the same place. You could’ve called to let us know what was going on. Stop being so fucking selfish and realize you aren’t the only person that cares about her.”

My eyes pop at her blunt fierceness.

Before he has the chance to respond, the doctor steps into the room. “Miss Somers, how are you feeling?” he asks, looking between the four of us.

“A little fuzzy, but I think I’m fine.”

His forehead wrinkles, eyeing the guys cautiously. The tension in the room is high, and there’s no doubt he’s feeling it.

“Hopefully the fluids are helping. Can we get her another bag? This one is almost finished,” he says to the nurse standing behind him. She gives a curt nod and heads out of the room.

The doc starts flipping through paperwork on his clipboard, and I watch as his face turns sour. His eyes meet mine, and for a brief second, he looks like he feels sorry for me.

“I’d like to speak with Miss Somers privately,” he says.

The guys look like they want to argue, but Cassie speaks up before they have a chance to protest. “Let’s go assholes, you heard the doc. Out.”

Dante leans forward, kissing my forehead. “We’ll be right outside.”

Jax replaces Dante at my side, pressing his lips to mine. His hand sweeps into my hair, giving it a tug, and a moan slips from my lips.

Cassie’s chuckles bring me out of my Jaxon state of mind. He pulls back, giving me a clear view of the doc shifting awkwardly on his heels.

Jax mouths the three little words I want to wrap myself in for all of eternity.

The drum of my heartbeat picks up as they exit the room, leaving me alone with the doctor.

“Hit me with it, Doc.” Whatever it is can’t be any worse than what we’ve already been through.

“Ms. Somers, I didn’t want to announce this in front of your friends. Everyone deserves the chance to process this on their own terms.”

“Okaay.” Well, now he’s got me nervous.

“I hear you’ve had a little bit of a bad run of things lately, and I wasn’t sure how you’d take the news.”

“No offense, but spit it out already. You’re making me a nervous wreck.”

“Alright then, I apologize.” He clears his throat. “Ms. Somers, while you were out, we went ahead and drew blood to run a few labs. I wasn’t sure if you were aware, but you are pregnant.”

“Ex-fucking-scuse me! I’m what?” He takes a step away from the bed. Coward.

“There’s no—” My brain runs through every scenario. “I’m on—”

Shit.

When was the last time I took my birth control?

Before the kidnapping? No, I think I took it after.

Shit. I can’t remember.

“Even if you were taking some sort of birth control, your records show you were recently administered antibiotics in the hospital. That could have affected the efficiency of your birth control.”

I nod my head in disbelief.
