My eyes fall shut, I take a deep breath before opening them again.

“Cain!” I choke out, swallowing the salty, metallic liquid coating my tongue.

Cain turns with his brows raised then waves his hand dismissing us as he throws his weight around.

“What’s the word from the others?” I ask with a gnawing feeling swirling in my gut.

It was a complete shock to see the Reapers and the Sons fighting alongside one another. I guess when you want to put a monster down, the best way is to join forces.

Too bad the bastard got away.

“No loss of life for any of the Sons. A few guys got injured, but nothing serious.” I nod, taking note of the drop in his voice. That’s good news for us so what’s with the tone I wonder.

Zeke’s face scrunches as he searches for the right words to say. “Looks like King’s boy and the other one, Cassie’s brother, got hit, along with a couple other Reapers. They’re headed this way now.” He shrugs, looking away in the distance. He’s avoiding my stare.

“Can’t say I’m sad about that,” I huff in pain as I try to adjust myself in the chair.

Royal killed my brother, so his days are numbered anyway, but the other one is Angel’s best friend, and he’s always been a good kid. Not sure why he ended up involved in the Reapers in the first place, but he belongs on a beach surfing with Angel, not in the middle of this war. I’m sure Angel would be beside herself if something happened to either one of them. I don’t like the fact that that bothers me so much.

I frown and try not to read into those thoughts. It’s just a concern for a friend. That’s it.

A friend I rather enjoyed fucking. What the fuck am I talking about? I don’t have friends, especially ones half my age. Regardless of the connection I feel toward her, the constant ache in my chest or the cosmic pull buried in my soul, I need to keep my distance.

Nothing good can come from me getting closer to her.Nothingat all.

Besides, the closer I get, the more danger she’s in. So I’m going to stay the fuck away from her. I did my best to bury my feelings for her in front of King. The more distance I put between us, the better she is for it.

Zeke clears his throat, catching my attention. I turn to see his brows furrowed and the creases in his forehead look like they’re about to burst.

I purse my lips, shaking my head. “Spit it out. What are you not telling me?”

He pushes his shoulders back as if he’s summoning the courage to speak.

“Looks like King took another shot at Angel. Like a literal shot. Apparently she was in some sort of shoot-out with a few guys he sent after her.”

I’m going to kill him. I’m going tofuckingkill him.

My fists clench as my heart pounds against its cage. Heat floods my body and my vision blurs as the rage consumes me.

Chapter two

Angel

The snap of the front door colliding with the wall hits my ears as Jax and Dante burst through the house. The door bounces off the wall then slams behind them.

Royal’s going to fuck them up for putting a hole in his wall.Oh shit, Royal’s going to fuckmeup for getting blood all over his new carpet.

Their feet come to a screeching halt as their eyes bounce around the room surveying the damage.

Their jaws drop and I wait for the yelling to start up.

The smell of blood and gunpowder fills the air.

I roll to my side, gasping for air to fill my lungs. I’m covered in blood, someone else’s blood which is a good thing but still grosses me the fuck out. I have the incessant need to scratch my nose but there’s blood covering my hands. A shiver runs up my spine as I stare at them in horror.

“Fuuuck!” Jax shouts. His stormy gray eyes widen in shock as he thrusts a hand into his short brown hair. Dante stands beside him, staring at Cassie, which makes me glance in her direction.

A house full of dead bodies. Check.
