A traumatized Cassie. Check

A strong urge to go scrub my body down until my skin bleeds. Double Check.

Cassie’s standing in the hallway with a gun in her hand, her complexion ghostly white.

“Cass,” I call out. “Hey, Cass, look at me, not them. Keep your eyes on me.”

She doesn’t move, still frozen in the same spot. A moment later she’s clutching her chest while her eyes snap to me. Her gaze drops back and forth between me and the dead body with horror.

Fuck!She’s in shock.

I look to my side seeing one of my attackers still bleeding out. He’s leaking blood all over the place.Great way to break in the house, Angel.

Cassie sobs and I know I need to help her but Jax beats me to it.

“What the fuck?” Jax blurts, rushing over to Cassie and taking the gun from her grasp. She releases it to him without a word. He frowns, tucking the gun in his waistband and then turns to me.

I use the small amount of energy I have left to kick his lifeless body away from me. Bastard was seconds away from choking the life out of me. I’d be a dead woman if Cass had stayed hidden in the room like I told her to.

I take a deep breath and shake my head, thinking about what might have been.Don’t think about it, Angel. Cassie did good, and you’re both safe.

Thank God she didn’t listen, she’s always been a little hardheaded like that, but today, I couldn’t be happier that my girl’s a rule breaker. She listened to her gut and that saved both our lives. Even if that means she’s traumatized for life, at least we’re both alive to tell the tale.

“You’re a little late to the show, boys,” I choke out, sucking another breath deep into my lungs.

I try pushing myself off the ground, but my arms quickly give out, and I end up collapsing. The adrenaline pumping through my veins moments ago is now completely gone, leaving my body weak and exhausted.

Jax comes over to pick me up off the ground, then he sets me on my feet and pulls me into his embrace.

One of my favorite places to be is in Jax’s arms. I nuzzle my head into his chest, soaking up his warmth.

He kisses the top of my head then down my cheek. “Fuck, baby. Are you okay?”

I shrug my shoulders, pulling back to look into his beautiful gray eyes. “Yes. No. I don’t know. It all happened so fast.”

“You’re a fucking badass, Trouble.” He squeezes me tighter, pressing his lips to mine. I close my eyes, savoring the moment. My lips part, and his tongue sweeps in, stealing my breath once more.

“I’m so sorry we left you here unprotected. Never again!” he shouts, trembling with rage.

“We’re okay. It’s fine, really Jaxon.” I take his head in my palms, forcing him to look at me.

His stormy eyes flare as he shakes his head from my grip. “No, it’s not.”

Everyone was so caught up with catching King and saving Gabriel—including me—that no one suspected King to know they were coming for him. We all thought that I’d be safer here than anywhere else. What a fucking joke that was!

No one is safe as long as King is still breathing.

He frowns. Sadness and hurt filling his features. “I’m sor—”

“Stop! Stop apologizing. You didn’t know.” I clutch his shirt with my fists.

He nods, squeezing his eyes shut. His hands fall to my waist pulling me closer to him. “I wouldn’t survive this life without you, Trouble,” he breathes. The vice grip these guys have on my heart is a force of its own.

“I love you, Jax,” I breathe.

He claims my lips. “I love you, Trouble. I’m so fuckin’ proud of you.” His tongue swirls down my neck after each word. My skin prickles with anticipation. A burning desire floods to my core making my pussy clench with need.

Someone clears their throat in the distance bringing me back to reality. I’m a little light-headed, and it takes me a second to get my bearings, but then I remember we aren’t alone.
