Lucky parks the bike against the curb, holding his hand out to help me get off. As soon as my feet touch the ground, three familiar faces step onto the porch, grimacing.

Shit. Maybe I should have waited for his response before coming over here.

Gabe stands looking grisly as ever with his arms crossed, slightly shaking his head at me.

“Good to see you too, Gabe,” I huff, walking across the yard with Lucky hot on my heels. “Did you not get my message?”

Gabe cocks his head at me. “Did you not get my response? I told you now’s not a good time,” he growls.

“Chill with the attitude,” Lucky says, crowding me. “It’s obviously important or we wouldn’t be here.”

Gabe signals to the door as the others step aside, allowing us entrance. The moment I walk through the doors, a wave of emotion comes over me. My chest is heavy, forcing myself to put one foot in front of the other.

You can do this, Angel. You just need to get it over with—tell him and go back to the guys where they are waiting with open arms. Then do this all over again. Fuuuck.

Zeke and Cain are the last to enter, closing the door behind them. Lucky looks at Zeke with a frown, and I start to wonder what that’s about, but Gabe’s voice cuts through the air, pulling me away from that thought.

“What’s so important that it couldn’t wait, and why is he here with you?” The look he gives Lucky sends a chill up my spine. Maybe this wasn’t the best idea, putting Lucky in enemy territory and outnumbered.

I spare a worried glance at Luck, but he’s standing his ground, staring Gabe down with the same feral look in his hazel eyes.

“Can you just not be a dick right now?” I say to Gabe, stepping between the two of them. “It was just a few weeks ago that Lucky put his life on the line to help rescue you. Show an ounce of gratitude.”

Gabe scowls, breaking the stare-off he and Lucky are having, directing that anger at me. He steps forward, locking eyes with me. “Do you not understand how dangerous it is for you to be here?” My chest deflates, it feels like I’ve been hit with a ton of bricks.

He was trying to protect me, not push me away.

The few conversations we’ve had over the past weeks have been short. He makes a point to keep things short and sweet, always rushing me off the phone.

At first, I thought he was just coping with everything he had gone through at the hands of King, but as the days went by and our conversations got shorter, I started to get confused.

Was it all one-sided? Was the constant pull I felt toward him just in my head?

It’s not like I expected him to fall at my feet in love, but we had something. A connection like I’ve never felt, we’ve both admitted as much. I put everything on the line for him, and he was pushing me away like I meant nothing to him.

I was lost and confused, but instead of giving in to those feelings, I took care of the guys. They needed me. Royal and Lucky were recovering, Jax was angry at the world, and Dante was finally getting past my betrayal.

“Angel, I’m serious, you shouldn’t be here,” he says, taking another step toward me. He starts to reach for me, but his hand stops short, and he drops it back to his side.

“Can we talk?” I glance back at Zeke and Cain then back to Gabe. “Alone.”

I swear he growls, running a hand down his face. “Out back.” He signals for me to lead the way, but I turn back to Lucky. I’m met with a scowl, but it’s not for me, his eyes are locked on Gabe.

“I’m fine, Luck. I’ll say what needs to be said, and we can go home.” My hand glides down his arm, hoping to ease some of the tension flowing through him.

No words are spoken. He nods, dropping a kiss to my forehead, and I move toward the back door.

Seems fitting most of our important conversations happen here, so why not add this one to the list?

We step outside with the hot California sun beaming down on us. Before I can say a word, Gabe shuts the door and turns his frustration on me.

“Spit it out so you can be on your way.”

Dick.

I spin on my heels, standing toe to toe with him. “Stop being an asshole for two seconds. I haven’t seen you since the hospital, and this is the way you treat me?” Holding my head high, I look him directly in the eyes.

He grabs both my arms, pulling me to him and startling me. “Every second you’re here, you are putting your life at risk. Do you think I need more blood on my hands? Do you think I need another woman I care about dying at the hands of King before I can put him down?”
