I did my best to lighten up, but with the anxiety that had built up in me, I wasn’t sure that would even be possible at this point. I felt like I had a huge sign pointing down at me and revealing to them both what I had been doing, and every single thing out of their mouths was leading up to one of them asking me about dating Neils.

I reminded myself more than once that neither of them knew the truth, but I had been planning to tell Krissy during this trip. I had no idea what to do now that my dad was also here. Not to mention I was a little irritated with him just showing up like that, and I felt guilty over having that reaction.

We were nearly done with the meal when my father rose.

“I’m going to visit the restroom before we take off,” he said. “Pay the whole bill with this.”

“You don’t have to do that,” I said, but he insisted.

“You might be an adult now, but I’m still your dad, and I can buy you dinner when I want to,” he said.

“That’s fair,” I replied. “Thanks, Dad.”

“Thank you!” Krissy called after him. “I’m not going to complain about free food no matter what.”

I laughed. But she gave me a look.

“What?” I asked.

“There’s something up with you.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, my heart freezing in my chest. She gave me another look.

“I know you better than you know yourself. If there’s something going on, I’m going to know. Now are you going to come clean or what?”

“Not yet,” I said. “I will. But please don’t say anything to my dad.”

“Okay,” she said. “But you better tell me soon.”

“I will,” I promised.

But now, I was dreading the conversation.

“What are you doing? Are you crazy?” I hissed when Neils followed me out into the dark night.

“Crazy about you maybe,” he whispered back.

“You’re going to get us caught!” I said.

“By who? Everyone is in bed,” he retorted. “I’m assuming since you’re out here that Krissy must be asleep.”

“Yes,” I admitted.

She and I were sharing my room, and my bed, too. My friend had always been a heavy sleeper, and after traveling all day, she was sleeping even harder than usual. It was her snoring that finally got me up and out of bed, just trying to find some quiet.

“I figured I’d step out and get some fresh air for a minute, and that might help me get some sleep,” I said. “But what are you doing creeping around out here?”

“You know me, I like being out at night,” he said.

“Dad must be in bed, too?”

“He is.”

My father was staying in Neils’ office. He’d had a twin sized bed delivered that afternoon despite my dad’s protests and insisting he could sleep on the couch, which I now was grateful for. With my dad at least in a closed room, it minimized the chances he was going to hear me or anyone else walking around in the living room.

“You know he’d kill you if he saw you out here with me,” I said.
