“I get it,” Felix said. “But trust me, things will get better. And if you ever need someone to talk to or just a break from the craziness, I’m here.”

“Thanks.” Brooklyn smiled gratefully at him. “I appreciate it.”

Brooklyn’s friend list while living in Clover had been zero. Now he had Marcus, but he doubted he could reveal what he knew to his friend. However, Felix was in the same boat and would understand whatever Brooklyn was going through. “We’ve totally got to hang out.”

Felix grinned. “Name the place and time, and I’ll be there. I’ve been dying to make friends who know about this world, and now I have you.”

“I think I’ve drank enough.” Brooklyn set his glass on the counter, feeling a tad lightheaded. “I also have to meet with a client, so I have to go.”

“What do you do?” Felix asked.

“Interior design.” He looked around the kitchen. It was nice, but already ideas had started popping into Brooklyn’s head on how he could make it cozier.

“Wow, that’s really cool,” Felix said. “Maybe you can help me redecorate my bedroom sometime.”

Brooklyn grinned. “I’d love to.”

As he made his way toward the door, Kieran appeared, a concerned expression on his face. “Are you leaving already?”

Brooklyn nodded. “I have a client meeting.”

“I’ll walk you out,” Kieran said, taking Brooklyn’s hand in his. “I need to talk to you.”

Brooklyn looked at Kieran, unsure of what to expect. They walked in silence until they were outside, and then Kieran stopped, turning to face him.

“I’m sorry about earlier,” Kieran said. “I don’t want you to think badly of me because I tracked you down.”

“No.” Brooklyn shook his head. “It’s not that. Not entirely. It was what your friend said.”

“Cyrus?”

“He said you couldn’t keep it in your pants.”

Kieran groaned. “Sometimes Cyrus plays too damn much. Don’t take what he said to heart.”

“My ex cheated on me countless times, Kieran. I’m already unsure about this whole mating thing, but I’m damn sure not going to put up with infidelity.”

“I would never cheat on you,” Kieran said firmly. “I may have been a bit reckless in the past, but I’m serious about you, Brooklyn. I want to show you that being a shifter’s mate isn’t so bad. That it can be the best thing that ever happened to you, to us.”

Brooklyn looked up at Kieran, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. “I want to believe that,” he said softly. “But I’ve been burned too many times, and I’m not sure I can just blindly give you my trust.”

“Your ex was an asshole,” Kieran brushed a knuckle down Brooklyn’s cheek. “He didn’t realize what he had. That’s his loss.”

Brooklyn’s heart skipped a beat at Kieran’s touch. He wanted to believe the wolf shifter, but his past experiences were still fresh in his mind. “I just need some time, Kieran. I need to process everything.”

He couldn’t deny the attraction he felt toward Kieran, but a part of him was still scared of being hurt again.

“I’ll do everything in my power to never hurt you,” Kieran promised. “And I’ll be patient. I know you need time to adjust to all of this.”

Brooklyn was relieved. Kieran was different from Blaine, and Brooklyn could feel it. He wanted to trust him, but it was a process.

“I’ll be patient too,” Brooklyn said, smiling faintly.

Kieran’s face lit up with a smile, and he leaned forward to kiss Brooklyn gently on the lips. Brooklyn’s heart raced as he felt Kieran’s warm lips pressing against his. It was a gentle kiss, but it held so much promise and hope.

“I’ll see you soon.” Kieran pulled away.

They stood there for a moment longer, just looking at each other. Brooklyn didn’t want to go, but he couldn’t let down his client. He’d built his business from the ground up, and he was determined to keep his livelihood going.
