Rayne paced back and forth in the living room of his home. Kieran and Cyrus were supposed to have checked in by now, but they hadn’t. It was unlike them to go radio silent for so long. Fear gnawed at Rayne’s gut. He was worried about what could have happened to them.

Felix sat on the couch, his eyes glued to the TV, but Rayne couldn’t relax.

When his phone rang Rayne grabbed it off the coffee table and answered without looking at the caller ID. “Hello.”

“We got a problem,” Cyrus said, his voice tense.

“What do you mean?” Rayne’s heart started racing. “Where are you?”

“Outside Club Lure. I lost sight of Milton, but I heard something and went to investigate. I found Kieran, knocked out.”

“Shit,” Rayne muttered. “Okay, stay put. I’m on my way.”

He hung up and grabbed Felix’s arm. “We need to go. Kieran’s been attacked.”

Felix’s eyes widened with concern. “What the hell happened?”

“I don’t know, but we need to hurry.”

They rushed to Club Lure, and when they arrived, they found Cyrus pacing outside. “He’s in there,” he said, pointing to the door. “After I found Kieran on the floor, the bouncer and a few other guys tossed me out. I tried to get back in, but the door is locked.”

Rayne took charge, his mind already racing with possible scenarios. “Cyrus, go around the back and see if there’s another way in. Felix, stay here and keep watch. I’m going to try to get in through the front door.”

Cyrus nodded and darted off toward the back of the building.

Rayne rolled his shoulders, forcefully keeping his wolf from breaking free as he approached the front door. It was made of steel, and there was no way to break through it. He frowned, considering his options. There had to be another way in. He circled the building, looking for any sign of weakness. That was when he saw it—a small window on the side of the building, just big enough for him to crawl through.

“That’s too high,” Felix said, following Rayne. “Maybe there’s a crate or something we can use.”

“We?” Rayne looked down at the human. “I told you to stay put in the front.”

“Yeah, but if I don’t listen to Eleazar most of the time, you don’t stand a chance.”

“I don’t need a crate, and you need to go back to the car.”

“But I’m a part of this team,” Felix protested. “You gave Cyrus something to do. I want something, too.”

“The car,” Rayne snarled.

“Fine, whatever.” Felix’s shoulders slumped as he walked back to the front of the building.

Rayne closed his eyes and focused on his wolf, feeling the primal energy surge through him. With a roar, he shifted into his wolf form, his fur rippling over his skin. He was bigger and stronger now, his senses heightened. He leapt up to the window and squeezed through, landing on the other side, his paws making no sound on the floor.

The club was dimly lit, but Rayne had no problem seeing. He could also smell blood—Kieran’s blood. His heart raced as he followed the scent, his hackles raised in anger and fear.

He found Kieran lying on the floor, his body battered and bruised. Rayne nudged him with his nose, trying to wake him up. But there was no response. Kieran was unconscious.

Rayne growled, his eyes scanning the room for any sign of Milton or the bouncer. That was when he saw a shadow in the corner.

Milton emerged, a smirk on his face. “Ah, the alpha has arrived,” he said. “You shouldn’t have poked your nose where it doesn’t belong.”

With a snarl, Rayne shifted back into his human form. His fur retracted and his clothes enveloped his body. He bared his canines, his growl vibrating through the room. “What did you do to him?” He indicated Kieran’s unconscious form.

Milton shrugged. “Just a little warning. Stay out of our business, hunter, and your friend won’t get hurt worse.”

Rayne launched himself at Milton. The human was fast, but Rayne was faster. He tackled Milton to the ground, sinking his sharp teeth into the man’s shoulder. Milton screamed and struggled, but Rayne held on tight. He could hear footsteps approaching and knew he had to finish this quickly.

With one swift movement, Rayne snapped Milton’s neck. The human went limp beneath him, and Rayne released him, panting heavily.
