Rayne was going to find out who was behind this and kill the son of a bitch. He would handle it personally. He needed to see what he could find out on his end. The attack on them was a personal matter, and to keep his pack and mate safe, he needed this done now, because whoever was behind this would do it again.

Felix believed that the shootout was aimed at him, but no one could have known that Rayne had decided to take his mate with him. No, those men had been after Rayne or his men.

He put on a fresh set of clothes before heading out of the bedroom to his office. He felt the weight of his mate’s safety on his shoulders, and he had no intention of letting Felix out of his sight. He knew that he was going to have to be careful. Whoever had come after them was brazen and not afraid to take on a wolf pack.

It was a dangerous game, and Rayne was determined to win.

“That quick picture I snapped of the shooters hasn’t helped. So far no one knows who those men were,” Kieran said as he walked into Rayne’s office.

Ryne had been hoping someone would know who those men were so he could tie them back to whoever had sent them. Of course he wouldn’t be that lucky.

“How’s Felix?” Kieran sat in the chair in front of Rayne’s desk.

“Still a bit shaken. He thinks the attack was aimed at him.”

Kieran shook his head. “I still can’t believe you found your mate. I have to admit I didn’t trust him at first, but he’s growing on me.” He smiled.

“Would you protect him with your life?” Rayne already knew the answer, but for some reason, he wanted to hear it out loud. He wanted his pack’s complete loyalty when it came to Felix.

Kieran’s smile faded, replaced by a deep scowl. “In a heartbeat. He’s one of us now, Rayne, and we take care of our own. I just wish he hadn’t served the most powerful vampire in Ridgeway. Kind of makes one wonder about his loyalties.”

Rayne didn’t doubt Felix for a second. “He inherited the position from his father,” Rayne said firmly.

Kieran nodded, but Rayne still saw the doubt in the man’s eyes. “You’re right. I trust your judgment, Rayne.”

“I need you to keep digging into any possible leads on who could have been behind the attack,” Rayne said, leaning forward in his chair. “We need to get one step ahead of them.”

Kieran nodded again. “You know I’m already on it. I’ll let you know if I find anything.” He started to get up but relaxed back in his seat. “One more thing. Another human went missing. A bartender.”

“How do you know it’s related to the other missing people?”

“Same M.O. Disappeared without a trace. From what I learned, the guy went out back for a break and simply vanished. The human’s boss said he’d gotten a call and went into the alley for privacy, but he never came back. His cell phone was found in the alley behind the bar.”

Just like the others. Simply vanished. Rayne wouldn’t have thought the disappearances were related, but one thing tied them all together.

Their cell phones were found on the ground where they were last seen, as if whoever was doing this was making sure the human couldn’t be tracked. “Get Cable and Cyrus on it.”

“You got it.” As Kieran walked out, Felix walked in.

“Is it okay that I’m in here?” He looked around and whistled. “Nice office.”

Rayne smiled at his mate. “It’s your office now, too, if you want it to be.”

Felix walked over to Rayne and sat on the edge of the desk. “Rayne, I don’t know how to thank you for saving my life. I owe you everything.”

Rayne took Felix’s hand in his. “You don’t owe me anything, Felix. You’re my mate, and I’ll always protect you. It’s what I was born to do.”

Felix twisted his lips to the side of his mouth. “I hardly think that’s true, but I like that you think so. Anyway, I feel like I’m in the middle of something big, something dangerous.”

“You are,” Rayne said bluntly. “But I won’t let anything happen to you.”

Felix met his gaze, his eyes full of trust. “I know you won’t.”

A sense of pride and love swelled inside him. Rayne knew he would do anything to keep Felix out of harm’s way, and he would destroy anyone who stood in his way.

Felix’s eyes softened as he looked at Rayne, and he leaned in for a kiss. Rayne’s lips met his, their passion for each other only growing stronger.

As their lips parted, Felix locked eyes with Rayne. “I trust you,” he said simply.
