“Are you sure you trust a hunter?”

Felix waved him off. “So over that. I understand why you do what you do, Rayne. You’re only trying to protect the innocent.”

Rayne and his pack had killed many vampires in their quest for domination. He was no hero, not by a longshot. The fight between wolves and vampires was centuries old, maybe even longer than that, and he had to do whatever it took to ensure that his kind would always come out on top.

Being a hunter wasn’t always about protecting the innocent, but he didn’t tell Felix that.

Rayne gave his mate a small smile. He was grateful for Felix’s understanding, but he couldn’t shake off the feeling of guilt that had settled within him. He knew that his actions weren’t always justifiable, and it was a burden he carried with him every day.

It wasn’t easy being an alpha, being the one who made the decisions that affected so many lives. It was a burden he gladly carried, but it was still a heavy weight on his shoulders.

He wasn’t sure how he did it, but he did know that he wouldn’t survive now without Felix.

This time when he met his mate’s gaze, there was a spark of lust between them.

Felix leaned in for another kiss, and this time Rayne deepened it. He slipped his hands into his mate’s hair, his tongue exploring his mouth seductively. Felix matched his movements, his tongue finding its mark.

Rayne tilted his mate’s head to give himself better access. Felix made a sexy sound in the back of his throat, a sound that turned Rayne on.

Rayne pulled his mate onto his lap, his cock hard as it pressed against Felix’s ass. He wanted more than anything to make love to his mate, to bury himself inside Felix’s tight hole and claim him once more. But he knew they had important matters to attend to, and he couldn’t lose his focus. Reluctantly, Rayne pulled back from the kiss, his forehead resting against Felix’s.

“As badly as I want to bend you over my desk, we can’t get carried away,” he whispered breathlessly. “We have work to do.”

Felix’s gaze was still filled with desire. “I know. But later, when we’re alone...” He trailed off, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

Rayne chuckled, running his hand down Felix’s back. “Later,” he promised. “But for now, we need to focus on finding out who’s behind the disappearances.”

“I’ll do whatever I can to help. Just tell me what you need me to do.”

“Kieran just told me someone else was snatched.” Rayne pulled his forehead away from Felix’s. “I want to go to that alley and see if I can find any familiar scents.”

“Another person?” Felix cursed. “Okay, but when you’re done with that, I’m going to Eleazar’s to get my things. If I have to wear this outfit one more day, I might scream.”

“I’m going with you.” Rayne didn’t relish the idea of stepping into Eleazar’s home, but no fucking way was he letting Felix out of his sight.

“Are you sure you want to go?” Felix asked. “You two are enemies.”

“What I want is to take you back to my room and lock you in there until this is over, but I can’t do that.” Rayne sighed. “So, yes, I want to go there. Are you ready?”

Felix climbed off his lap, and Rayne missed the heat and slight weight instantly. “As ready as I’m ever going to be. Just as long as no black vans pull up on us, I’ll be fine.”

Rayne wanted to take some of his men with him, but Eleazar might see that as an act of aggression. He was already going to be walking into enemy territory, Rayne didn’t need tempers to rise more than they already were.

“Call ahead and clear the way.” Rayne wanted to go while the sun was out, lessening the possibility of an all-out attack if Eleazar’s coven didn’t take kindly to a wolf in their home. The interior would more than likely be blanketed in darkness, but Rayne wanted the option of opening a heavy drape or the front door to blast those bastards with sunlight if things went sideways.

Twenty minutes later they were in the alley behind Shinedown. It was a decent bar in a decent neighborhood that mostly catered to humans. Traffic on the street was light, and not too many people were walking by. Rayne strode into the alley, Felix at his side. He saw the side door but also noticed the alley was a dead-end with no way out except the exit spilling onto the street.

“The perfect place to commit a crime.” Felix looked around. “Do you smell any familiar scents?”

Rayne tilted his head back and inhaled deeply. “Vampire, but I don’t know who.” He pointed to a door on the other side of the alley, right across from Shinedown’s side entrance. “I’m guessing that’s where the victim was taken.”

“Wouldn’t the cops have checked that already?” Felix asked.

“It hasn’t been twenty-four hours, so I doubt they’ve even started an investigation.”

“That rule is so fucked up,” Felix said. “Crazies have twenty-four hours to do what they want with their victim. By the time cops get involved, it’s probably too late.

Rayne agreed as he stared at the building next to the bar. The door was metal, the bottom part dented and scratched from what looked like years of being kicked. It was the color of rust, and the windows up top were covered with black-out curtains. He opened the door, the hinges groaning in protest.
