She’s in a short pencil skirt similar to the one she was wearing the night we met, only in fire-engine red. Another pretty floral blouse tucked in, the neckline of this one dipping down just enough to drive me mad all day long. I wonder if she’s wearing one of those lacy one-piece things again and what color this one would be.

“Is there nothing left of mine that youaren’ttaking over?” she asks, coming to stand in front of me, her red heels toe-to-toe with my Oxfords.

I don’t know why my lips curve up, but they do. “If I hadn’t seen what a kitten you can be, I’d think you were all roar.”

Her eyelashes flutter as she glances down at my mouth, her own parting slightly. She shakes her head, her eyes closing for a second, and when she opens them again, her hand goes to her hip.

“You don’t want to see my claws come out, Wingtip,” she hisses.

I snort, and I swear, sparks of fire sizzle off of her. “Wingtip?”

“You walk on ice in those things?” She bops her head up once before glancing down at my shoes.

“Ahh,” I say, laughing. “I’d say they stand a better chance than those heels you’re wearing.”

“Oh, youthink?” she asks, nodding briskly, her big brown eyes and full lips defying me.

I want to kiss the pout right off of her mouth.

I take a step closer to her and she gasps. “Yeah, I do.”

She’s breathing so hard, her chest brushes against mine as she inhales, drops as she exhales. I live for the inhale.

“I could run the lodge on aniceberginheelsall day long, Jamison Ledger.”

“I have no doubt you could,” I say. Then I lean into her ear and whisper, “And that’s Orgasm Whisperer to you, beautiful.”

She freezes and when I stand upright again, her eyes are wide, her teeth scraping over that plump bottom lip.

I smile and turn to see Lar and Mar’s eyes bugged out, possibly struck speechless given the fact that they don’t say anything for what feels like a solid minute. Scarlett seems to be under the same affliction, so I clear my throat right as the phone rings again. Lar looks disappointed when he has to answer it.

“I’d like a large cup of whatever coffee you have with the most caffeine,” I say.

I feel Scarlett’s shoulders slump next to me, her head bowed when I turn to her.

“Can I buy you a cup of coffee?” I ask.

She shifts her lips to one side, embarrassed or apologetic, I can’t be sure. “No, thank you. I-I usually place an order for the lodge and thought you were—”

“I might’ve if you hadn’t gotten here when you did.” I opt for honesty instead of getting an apology I don’t deserve.

Mar clears her throat. “So, the one cup of coffee? And I’ve got your order ready to go, Scarlett. Seems to me Mr. Wingtip can go ahead and foot the bill,” she says, her eyes darting to the cash register. Her lips twitch with her effort to not smile. “Unless you’re taking this one, Kitten.”

When Mar looks up again, there’s a staredown between the three of us, Mar’s tongue in her cheek as Scarlett and I face her incredulously.

“I suppose we asked for that,” I say, placing my credit card on the counter.

“Welcome to Landmark,” Scarlett says.

Mar picks up my credit card with a smirk.

Lar hangs up the phone and turns toward us. “What’d I miss?”

“Gotta pay attention the first time, Lar. Drama like this doesn’t come free,” Scarlett says lightly.

Lar chuckles, and I grin down at the receipt as I sign it.

Sparring before sunrise, I had no idea what a rush that could be.
