“What do you mean?” I finally ask.

Her smile spreads across her face and she’s truly so beautiful. And absolutely has a mischievous streak.

She leans in, her tone conspiratorial. “Well, ifIwere betting in the town’s wager about my brother-in-law, and I won’t since that would be an unfair advantage because I know him so well,” she gives me a pointed look, “I’d put all my money onyou.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-TWO

CHEERS AND VISIONS

JAMISON

Zac and Pappy start in on me at the same time, one in either ear.

I knew I was asking for it the moment I signed that she’s beautiful, but I wanted Magnus fucking Evensen to back the fuck off.

I saw the way he was looking at her.

I love the guy, but hell no.

And bottom line, I wanted to tell her she’s beautiful. I would’ve signed a lot more, about what she’s doing to me in that dress, how the way she wants to learn signs the moment she meets Ivy means everything to me…

“He’s ignoring us, Pappy. Can you believe this guy?” Zac says, jabbing me in the gut. I yelp and they both cackle.

“Had I known you had a girl you were courting, I’d have come the very night you called,” Pappy says under his breath.

I’d called him after the dinner at Grinny’s, telling him things weren’t going so well.

“It’s not like that,” I tell them. “And I’m glad you’re here now. Are your eyes still feeling good? Seeing better and better?”

“Don’t change the subject on us, you little whippersnapper,” Pappy says.

We all three laugh and then Zac starts in on me.

“What do you mean it’s not like that? From where I was just standing, it very much looked like that,” he says.

“From my angle too, yes, yes, very much, same,” Pappy adds.

I laugh and slide my hand down my face before rubbing my hands together. “Oh, you guys. You wouldn’t believe me if I told you. And Icannottell you right now while she’s within hearing distance.”

“What if we talk in this tone right about here,” Pappy says, going even softer.

I crack up and his eyes crinkle as he laughs back at me. “I’ll say this much and that’s it. She hates me for buying her family’s resort…”

They wait for me to say more and when I don’t, Zac frowns and shakes his head. “Try again, brother.”

“That’s what it all boils down to,” I tell him. “We’ve barely spoken for the past two weeks. It’s better than it was for a while there, but that’s more recent. There’s a lot of avoidance going on. I’ve tried to get her to stay on as general manager, and she’s set on leaving when her contract is up in less than two months.”

We reach the entrance of The Pink Ski and Magnus steps up to open the door for everyone. I turn around and Scarlett and Autumn are farther back than I thought.

“Well, it’s good we came when we did,” Pappy says.

“Slow your roll, Pappy. You know I’ve never needed help with the ladies. That was this guy here.” I pound Zac’s back.

Pappy and Zac both snort.

“No, you’ve never had trouble finding a willingbody,” Zac says. “That’s something altogether different.”

“That’s right,” Pappy says. “It’s entirely different when you meet the one who sets your heart afire.”
