“That’s what I told him,” Callum says.

I lean in and look at both of them, my teeth clenched. “We’re staying, so shut up about it and fucking distract me.”

“Okayyy,” Wyatt says, laughing. “You got it, baby bro.” In a louder voice, he says, “How’s Amy these days, Theo?”

His eyes are wide when I look at him in confusion.

“Amy?” I ask.

“Damn, she’s got it all going on,” he says. “That body. That face. I wish I’d seen her first.”

“Yeah, me too,” Callum mutters slightly louder than usual. “You are one…lucky son of a bitch.” His eyes narrow into a death stare when I start to grin.

“Amy’s good.” I lean back in my chair. “She’srealgood.”

I’m so happy when our waitress comes to take our order because I know I’ll botch it up if I keep trying to think of random things to say about a person who doesn’t exist.

We order a lot of food and drinks, and Wyatt starts telling stories about Pine Community Hospital, mostly about the people he works with since he’s beyond protective of his patients and doesn’t break that confidentiality shit. Occasionally, though, he’ll tell us about some of the bizarre things that happen without revealing any names, and I don’t know how he does it day in and day out. Give me a bloated cow or a wheezing horse any day of the week. I’d much rather deal with sick animals than people.

I barely even notice that Sofie doesn’t touch the glass of wine her aunts order for the table or that she doesn’t eat much of her spinach ricotta ravioli.

Is she sad to hear about Amy?

I drain the last of my beer and push back from the table.

“I take it back about dessert,” I tell my brothers. “I need to get out of here.”

“On it,” Wyatt says, standing. “I’ll take care of the bill and meet you outside.”

“You’re not pay—”

“Don’t start,” he says. “You can cover next time.”

Callum and I stand up and he nods at the ladies across from us. I glance at Sofie and then focus on Hilary and Abby.

“Have a good night.”

“You too. So good to see you,” Hilary says.

“We’ll see you next time we’re in town.” Abby waves and takes a bite of her steak, pointing at me with her fork once it’s in her mouth. “Don’t forget.”

I smile and nod.

“Bye, Theo,” Sofie says softly.

And I don’t linger another second. I bolt.

Looks like I might join Callum in becoming a recluse.

CHAPTERFIVE

AMY, AMY, AMY

SOFIE

Aunt Hilary and Abby have been gone a few days and I’m surprised by how much I miss them. As much as I hate being in the house, the energy and joy they bring make it worth the pain and bad dreams.

I guess the silver lining with them not being around is that I won’t be forced to have dinner in the house with them and Theo. I couldn’t believe it when Abby invited him over. The look of nausea and absolute dread on Theo’s face was hard to miss. I’m surprised Abby didn’t see it, but she was too caught up in how good-looking he is to notice. They talked about him all the way home and how handsome his brothers are too, and I managed to get outWait until you see Sutton, and they have a beautiful sister too.
