I laugh too and stare at my hand. Bare. “Oh, I need that ring on my finger,” I tell him.

Which makes everyone laugh again.

“You should’ve told us this was happening, and we would’ve brought champagne to celebrate,” Wyatt says.

“I had a feeling something was up when Theo turned fifty shades of green there,” Scarlett says. “I’m so glad I had the camera.” She holds it up and does a little dance. “I think I got it all—oh wait, I need to stop talking and keep snapping while you guys are still being so cute.” She squeals and the camera clicks rapidly.

Theo and I stare intently at each other as he slides the ring on my finger and all feels right with the world. As far as I’m concerned, I’m already his and he is mine.

“How about an October wedding?” I say so only he can hear. “It’s just around the corner and this ring will be spectacular shining around all those fall colors.”

He grins and nods, his eyes so full of love, my heart skips a beat.

“I’ll be there,” he promises.

Theo ran beside me in the fields, and I was proud to be keeping up. Now that we were eight, he’d gotten a lot taller and faster than me.

I bumped into him when a horse ran by that I didn’t recognize, and we paused to watch until it was out of sight.

“Why am I out of breath and you’re not?” I asked, nudging his arm.

He cocked an eyebrow up and grinned. “Maybe because I can run a lot faster than this.”

I frowned and kicked at the grass beneath us. “So, I’m slowing you down?”

“No, I like running next to you.” He picked up a long blade of prairie grass and tucked it behind my ear. “I like doing everything next to you,” he said, bumping my arm with his until I looked up at him.

“You do?”

He nodded, his smile bright against his tan face, and I eventually caved, smiling back at him. His shoulders relaxed. He hated when I didn’t believe him. Which rarely happened, but lately I felt like he was growing up so much quicker than me.

I didn’t want him to start running so fast he forgot I was here.

“I do,” he said. “And someday, I’m going to ask you to marry me, Sofie, and we can do everything together all the time.”

My heart flooded with a thousand butterflies.

“I’ll say yes, Theo,” I promised. “I’ll always say yes to you.”
