I go check on the horses when I get back, spending extra time with Fiona. She’s filling out, and her coat looks healthier. She’s gotten so much more comfortable around me and the rest of the horses.
“Tomorrow, maybe we’ll try going for a ride,” I tell her before I go.
I yawn as I walk into the office and grab a towel and washcloth to take a quick shower. Ever since I left Grinny’s, I’ve been trying not to cry. It was so good to see everyone, and all in all, it went well, and yet, it’s a harsh reminder of how much has changed.
As soon as the water hits my back, the tears start flowing too, but I do my best to shut it down quickly. I used to get stuck in this downward spiral, and at times, it was hard to climb out of it, so I try to think of all the positive things that happened tonight.
My throat aches, but the tears have paused by the time I step out of the shower. I towel-dry my hair and body and then secure the towel under my arms, stepping out of the bathroom and into the office.
I hear a weird hinge squeak in the stables and open the office door to peek out, and I run right into Theo.

I reach out to steady her, my hands on either side of her arms, her wet hair cold between my hand and her heated skin. She teeters for a second, her eyes wild, and her towel drops to the ground.
Time stands still as we stare at each other, our chests rising and falling. I’m already hard and as badly as I want to, I haven’t even looked down her body yet, but the rest of me seems to be frozen. She crosses her arms and leans against the doorjamb. Her eyes land on the bulge in my pants and get stuck there for a few moments. When she looks at me again, her cheeks match her already flushed neck.
“Why now, Sofie?” My voice sounds tired.

Just like that. Like she’s not turning my world upside down yet again.
“You have a crazy way of showing it.” My hands go to my hips as I try to catch my breath, try to harness all the anger.
