Page 37 of Someday

Her eyes fly to mine, and she nods. She turns on music and then flips a switch so it doesn’t play in the office, but I hear it going in the stables.

“Chief doesn’t like fireworks. And I’m not sure how Fiona will feel about them…she’s a rescue I got a while back,” she says. “She’s adjusting well, but the fireworks could set her off. They both like music though so sometimes I turn it on before they come in for the night. And Chief is doing well, much better since you last saw him.”

She wipes her face again and takes a deep breath.

“I’m glad to hear it,” I tell her.

“I’m embarrassed I didn’t think to soak the hay myself.”

She leans against the desk, and I stay in the doorway, not sure what to do with myself.

“So, you’re just staying out here for the night,” I say, not sure why I’m pushing it.

She looks away and starts to nod but then stops, her cheeks flushing.

“No, I always stay out here,” she admits.

She moves toward the mini fridge and opens it, holding out a bottle of 90 Shilling.

“Beer?” she asks.

“You’re stocking 90 Shilling in here?” I say lightly, even though my stomach is doing all kinds of gymnastics inside.

“Is that still your favorite?”

“Yes.”

She pops the lid and hands it to me.

“Thank you.”

There’s so much I want to ask her, but I take a few swigs of the cold beer and watch as she pulls a bottle out and does the same.

“Can I…help you get the horses ready for the night? If you’re worried about the fireworks, it’d be good to take care of them soon.”

She runs her hand down her arm, and I watch as a trickle of condensation from the bottle drips onto her other arm.

“I can do it.” She takes a deep breath. “Thank you for…earlier. I think I’m okay now.”

“It hasn’t been that long, and you don’t look okay…I mean, you look fine, just…let me help.” I take another swig from the bottle and then place it back in the fridge. “And I want to finish this after.”

She looks at me tentatively and nods once before turning and going into the stables and out the door toward the pasture. Fortunately, the random pops of the light fireworks people do at home are far enough away that it doesn’t seem to affect the horses too much. We change out the water and refresh their food and then go back in and muck their stalls.

As soon as that’s done, we bring them in for the night and Sofie has just turned up the music slightly when the first round of Landmark Days’ fireworks goes off.

I nuzzle Fiona and am happy to note that she seems calm. I’ve also been keeping an eye on Sofie during the process, and she’s calmed too.

Everything in me knows I shouldn’t be sticking around, but I keep ignoring the voice in my head.

“Thank you for your help,” she says. “I would have never finished in time if you hadn’t been doing it with me.”

“It’s…no problem.”

We go back into the office, and she goes straight for the fridge, pulling out my beer and handing it to me.

“Thanks,” I say before lifting my bottle to my lips.

She grabs hers and I watch her head tilt back slightly as she takes several deep swallows. My dick stirs to life, and I take another long swig just to distract myself.
