“I’mso fucking sorry,Shae,” he says, his voice low.

Isigh. “It’snot your fault.Thereare assholes everywhere, unfortunately.”Andsometimes you don’t know they’re assholes until it’s too late.

Devon’sjaw tightens. “Hasthat happened before?”

Isidestep the question. “Nothinglike that.”

Luckily, he doesn’t push, just levels me with an intense look. “Ihate that he did that to you.”

Iswallow around the hard lump in my throat and rub my arms as the memory ofDavid’smouth on mine is replaced by the memory of someone else’s heavy body pressing me into the wall.

Devonunbuckles his seat belt and slides over to me. “Comehere,” he says, andIlean toward him so he can wrap his arms around me.Ilay my cheek against his chest and breathe in his familiar scent.Allmy knotted muscles relax, andIlet out a sigh.

Westay like that until we get home.

ChapterTen

Shae

“Comeon, beautiful, let’s get you inside.”Devonswipes his key fob and unlocks the door.

“I’msorry to cut your night short,”Isay as he leads me into the apartment by the hand.

“Don’tworry about it.”Heshoots me a wink. “Honestly.I’mmore than fine hanging out with just you.”

Ilook toward my bedroom, butIdon’t want to go to bed just yet. “Doyou want to do something?Watcha movie maybe?”Inall honesty,I’drather not be alone right now.

Heregards me for a moment, his lips pressed together. “Howabout we have a drink and chill?”

Thethought of having a quiet drink, just the two of us, is pretty appealing. “Okay.”

Behindthe bar in the living room, he rummages in one of the cupboards and pulls out a bottle ofPatróntequila, grinning as he holds it up.

“Ohgod.”Ishudder, then laugh. “I’mgoing to regret this tomorrow, but sure.”

Hegrabs two shot glasses out of the bar and comes back toward me.

“Doyou mind ifIchange?”Igesture at my outfit, which feels more uncomfortable than sexy now thatI’mhome.

Devon’sgaze moves over me, making my body hum. “Sure,” he says, then follows me into my bedroom and flops down on my bed whileIsnag my pajamas and take them into the bathroom.

Afterpulling on my tank top and sleep shorts, the ones with little pandas all over them,Iwash my makeup off, because after a few shots of tequila,I’llprobably forget to do it beforeIcrash.

WhenIstep into the bedroom,Itake in the long, lean figure on my bed.Devonis sitting sideways, his back against the wall, ankles crossed.Iclimb onto the mattress and face him, leaning against the headboard.

Hefills a shot glass with the clear liquid and hands it to me, then fills his own and holds it up in the air.Hiseyes glimmer in the low light of my bedside lamp. “Tobest friends.”

Ilean forward and tap my glass to his.ThenIraise mine to my mouth and tip it back, giving a little shiver as the fiery liquid burns down my throat.

WhenImeet his gaze again, there’s a crooked smile on his face.

“What?”Iask.

“Justwondering if you shiver like that every time you swallow…”

Mymouth drops open before he continues.

“Tequila, that is.”
