Ithrow a pillow at him, and he laughs as he catches it.

“You’reso juvenile.”Iturn up my nose at him but can’t hide my smile.

Hethrows the pillow back, hitting me in the face. “Youlove me.”

“Luckyfor you,Ido.”

He’squiet for a beat. “Let’splay a drinking game,” he says with an odd kind of intensity to his tone. “TruthorDare.”

Myeyebrows shoot up. “I’ma little scared of what truths you might share now that you’re a famous rock star.”

It’smeant as a joke, but his expression is serious when he replies. “I’mstill the same person,Shae.Youknow that, right?”

Feelingbad thatImight have upset him, particularly after what he did for me tonight,Ipoke his muscular thigh with my toes. “Iknow.Iwas only kidding.”

“So?”Heholds up the bottle and wiggles it, the seriousness replaced by a familiar, wicked grin.

Ilaugh. “Sure, let’s do it.”

Devonnods once and fills our glasses. “Okay, let’s see.”Henarrows his eyes at me. “Truthor dare?”

“Truth.”

Hisgaze goes unfocused, and he runs his thumb over his lower lip. “What’sthe one thing in life you wish you could change?”

That’san easy one.AndI’msure he already knows howI’llanswer. “Thatmy mom didn’t die.”Imight not remember her, sinceIwas a year old when she was killed in a car crash, butIknow from the wayDadtalks about her that she was a wonderful person.Shewas an amateur painter too, which was one of the reasonsIstarted painting—to feel closer to her.I’vespent many hours of my life wondering what things would be like if she were still here.

Devonnods, not in any way surprised.

“Yourturn,”Isay. “Truthor dare?”

“Truth.”

“Hmm.What’sthe craziest thing one of your fans has done to get your attention?”

Helaughs. “Onenight at a club, a woman snuck into the men’s bathroom and locked herself in a stall, waiting for the momentIcame in.Shemust have checked what shoesIwas wearing beforehand or something, and she spent who knows how long peering under the door at every person who came in until she recognized me.Thenshe burst out whenIwas mid-piss and scared the fucking life out of me.”

Igape at him with my mouth hanging open. “Areyou serious?”

Henods. “Almostgave me a heart attack.”

“Whatdid she say?”

Hisgrin fades a little and he rubs the back of his neck. “She, uh, offered to take care of me right then and there.”

“Ohgod, really? That’sso…”Ishake my head.Ican’t even begin to describe that kind of behavior.

“Yeah, well,Ididn’t take her up on it.Igot the fuck out of there and told our security to keep an eye out for her for the rest of the night.”

Well, that’s a relief.

“Okay,Bambi.Truthor dare?”

I’vemissed talking to him like this, soIkeep it simple and go with truth again.

“Whydid you break up withPhillip?”

Mystomach clenches, andI’minstantly thrown back to the momentPhilliphad me up against the wall.ThememoryI’vealready relived once tonight.
