“May I ask who else you’re considering?”

“No one. In fact, unless you agree to head it up, we may reevaluate forming the unit.”

“I wish I hadn’t asked.”

Merrigan smiled. “Yes, I’m sure knowing our intent makes your decision more difficult.”

“I’m flattered.”

“I’m sure you have questions.”

The first I’d ask wasn’t necessary information, but until I knew, I couldn’t think of any others. “Where would the primary base of operation be located?”

She nodded in a way that led me to believe she’d anticipated the question. “Given the missions you’ll be responsible for overseeing are international in nature, you could set up a command center, if you will, anywhere you’d like.”

“Meaning in the UK or elsewhere in Eurasia?”

“Not necessarily. You could base it out of the US or even here, if you’d prefer.”

“Here?”I gasped.

She smiled. “It was merely one suggestion.”

“What of my current investigation?”

“It would continue on in the same manner it is now except instead of Doc or I determining what support is needed, you would.”

“I see.”

“You should be aware we’ve extended an offer to Tryst to serve as a consultant.”

I wasn’t surprised. “Has he accepted?”

“We asked he think it over, and we’d circle back to him at a later date.”

“Is he aware of your offer to me?”

Merrigan leaned forward, and her eyes bored into mine. “No, Jaicon. The only people briefed on the new unit outside of Doc and me are Razor, Gunner, and Eighty-eight.”

The men she mentioned, Tabon “Razor” Sharp, Gunner Godet, and Mercer “Eighty-eight” Bryant, were, along with Doc, the founding partners of the original K19.

“Would you like to discuss salary?” she asked.

“Of course.”

“We’re prepared to offer two hundred thousand US dollars. That is negotiable.”

My eyes opened wide. “That’s more than the chief of MI6 earns.”

“Private intelligence is far more, shall we say, lucrative.”

“How soon do you need my answer?”

“Take your time. As I said, nothing will change in regard to your current investigation. However, if you choose to accept, our next order of business will be to form a team to support the primary case the UN coalition is working on now.”

“AMPS?”

“Correct.”
