“It isn’t my decision. I’d have to talk it over with Doc and Merrigan.”

He smiled again, and I laughed.

“You think they’ll go along with your plan.”

Tryst touched the tip of my nose with his finger. “I don’t think; I know.”

Tryst wasn’t wrong. However, our departure to Yavaros was delayed when Merrigan said she and Doc were on their way to Alamos later that same day. When I asked why, she said she had a few things she wanted to discuss with me.

“How was your Thanksgiving?” she asked when Tryst and I met her and Kade after they pulled up near the main house.

“Abundant,” I responded, winking.

“As are most things with Tryst. Even the intangible.”

I completely agreed, particularly after he offered them wine and something to eat.

“I’ll have a glass once Esencia and I have finished our conversation,” Merrigan replied before turning to me. “Shall we?”

“What about Doc?” I asked when he didn’t follow us to thecasita.

“We’ve reviewed the things I plan to discuss with you.”

I led her to the main room, and we each took a seat.

“Let’s get right to it, yes?” she began.

“Please.”

“As you are aware, the United Nations has formed a coalition intended to specifically address human trafficking, and five task forces, from the UK, US, Malta, Switzerland, and Albania, have been formed under the coalition.”

“I’ve kept up with the briefings.” I was also aware the coalition had recently raided a trafficking operation in Malta where a sex-slave auction was about to take place and that a civilian had shot and killed one of the men believed to have organized the abduction of at least twenty women, all of whom had been liberated.

“The UK task force suffered two casualties during the op in Malta.”

“Yes.” Jamie “Beak” Thomas and Tracy “Vulcan” North were both killed in the line of duty. I’d never worked a mission with either but had met both at SIS headquarters.

“Your name came up as a possible replacement.”

I nodded. “It was in the brief.”

“Before I ask if you’re interested, I have another proposition for you.”

“Go on.”

“Last year, K19 Security Solutions added a new unit, Shadow Operations. Thus far, their missions have all been Stateside.”

Shortly after the team’s formation, they’d solved a decades-old serial killing investigation, resulting in the arrest and conviction of the man who’d masterminded the murders that took place over the course of fifty years.

“K19’s founding partners have been exploring the possibility of adding another unit, one focused on international crime.”

It made sense, given several people working for the firm served on the UN coalition’s task forces.

“The proposed name is K19 Allied Intelligence, and I’m here to offer you the role of commander.”

I rested against my chair, stunned. I’d anticipated the options she intended to discuss with me were to either serve on the UK task force, as she’d stated, or to be a member of this new team. “Commander?”

“Yes, Esencia.”
