After returning with the portable X-ray machine, David determined the break was not as bad as he’d feared. He suggested putting a cast on it and waiting to see how it healed. The recovery would not be easy since Berta would not be able to put weight on it.

As I was leaving the barn, Jada approached me.

“Tryst, did you know Zin was here?” She had asked me a couple of days ago, and I’d assured her he wasn’t. Evidently, she’d sensed his presence then.

“Not until earlier, when he and Brix showed up in the pasture. When you asked, I didn’t know he’d come with my nephew. I would not lie to you, Jada.”

Now that he was here,I attempted to give Zin and Jada a wide berth, but the tension between them was evident. I found myself avoiding the barns and even the meditation center. Instead, I most often visited the chapel. That is where I was when I received a call from Montano.

“Hey, Tryst, is there someone here who can sit with Berta? Jada needs to leave the barn.”

“Of course,” I said. “There are several hands available to do so. Ask any one of them. Wait. Are you here, at the ranch?”

“Yeah, uh, Press and I flew down.”

Something told me nothing was as simple as it sounded. “I will meet you at the house.”

I’d just arrived and he and I were chatting when Jada came flying out of the bedroom.

“Where is Zin?” she demanded.

I looked from her brother to her, not knowing how to respond.

“Don’t pretend like you don’t know. Lynne just told me you took him to the hospital.”

I had no idea what she was talking about.

“I didn’t say he did. One of the cowboys swung by here, looking for him,” said Lynne, who looked over at me. “You, I mean.”

“I just returned.”

“Can you find out which hospital?” Jada asked.

I stood. “There is only one. I will take you.”

I waited in the truck while Jada spoke to her brother.

“What happened?” I asked once we were on our way.

“Montano caught us, uh, fooling around. He punched Zin. Again.”

I looked over at her with a raised brow.

“Come on. I’ve been seeing him for four years. You couldn’t have thought I meant anything other than having sex.”

I smiled and shook my head.

“I’m a grown woman,” she muttered.

“You will not get any argument from me. And just so you know, I’m happy to hear you were, uh, fooling around.”

When we arrivedat the hospital, Zin and Press were coming out the front entrance. I waited when Jada got out to speak with them.

“They’re going to follow us to the ranch,” she said a few minutes later.

“Can I give you some uncley advice?” I asked after we’d been driving a few minutes.

“Sure.”
