He stared at me for a long moment before shaking his head. “I don’t think I ever would’ve made a move if you hadn’t.”

“Yeah, you were taking your sweet time with that.”

“I thought you were straight. I didn’t want to scare you off.”

“You never noticed all those times I’d grab the seat by yours in chapter meetings? Or that I’d always swipe an extra red velvet cookie for you from the bakery near the house because I knew they were your favorite?”

“I…” He faltered. “I figured you were just being friendly.”

I snorted. “Your gaydar is weak, H.”

“I think I just built it up in my head so much that I’d convinced myself I couldn’t look at you that way. A protection thing, you know.”

“I get it.” And I did. He’d been doing the same thing ever since our breakup.

“But thank you,” he said, a soft smile on his face. “And not just for the cookies.”

If only Hudson always looked at me that way. It made my stomach flip. I was strangely nervous for what I was about to say.

“So…speaking of Keith…”

“Oh God. Please tell me you didn’t hook up with him.”

I practically shouted, “No.”

“You sure?”

“It was nothing like that, I swear. But I might’ve…convinced him to switch rooms on that trip.”

Hudson’s jaw dropped. “What?”

“I thought if you and I had some time alone that you would finally get it.”

“Hold on. You switched to my room to make a move on me?”

“Well, I was hopingyouwould make the move, but…yeah. I did.”

The look on Hudson’s face was priceless. “Holy shit. How’d you get him to switch?”

I shrugged. “Money talks.”

“Youpaidhim?”

“Well, I wasn’t going to give him the sexual favors I wanted to give you.”

Hudson burst out laughing, and I couldn’t help but join in. I would’ve paid a hell of a lot more than I did for a weekend alone with him back then, but Keith had only been too happy to score a balcony.

“Wow.” His eyes twinkled as he shook his head at me. “I’m impressed.”

“Yeah?”

“Hell yeah. He didn’t find it suspicious that you wanted to room with me?”

“Nah. I told him I was deathly afraid of heights and would pay him off to not tell any of the other guys.”

“And that worked.”

“Like a charm.”
