I felt a small pang looking at the tickets, it was strangely sad that the project was so similar to what I had in mind. Now, someone somewhere obviously had picked up interest in it and gone all out for it. Kaitlyn squeezed my fingers with a smile. “Hey, don’t do that.”

“Do what?” I asked innocently

“You’re about to beat yourself up, and I don’t like when you do that. You gave it your best shot. Those turtles are now getting the awareness they deserve because you championed it first. So it doesn’t matter if someone else is getting the lead on you, you can always do yours when you are ready. After all the sky is big enough for all of us to fly.”

Feeling warmed by her words, I offered her a cheeky smile. “Does it mean I get free fittings?”

“Smartass,” Kaitlyn said with a laugh.

“Is she bringing the Dolce & Gabbana fall line?”

“You betcha.” She winked. A little thrill of anticipation began in my toes and gradually warmed up to my fingers. For the first time in days, I was anticipating attending an event. This time with my best friend.

“So, what’s the plan?” I asked

“Well, aside from the fact that you’ll be my date, there are hundreds of available men who will be coming, too.”

“Kaitlyn,” I protested, shocked.

“What?” She replied surprised at my outburst.

“It’s too early. I just want to go there and have fun.”

“I was referring to me, silly. I don’t plan to be an old maid forever.”

“But, Kaitlyn.” I shrieked again this time in peals of laughter.

“Whatever happened to Matthew? You were crazy over him two weeks ago.”

“Two weeks is a long time to stay stuck up on someone, my love.”

“You’re incorrigible.” I grounded out holding my sides.

“I know, boo, good thing is you’re stuck with me too.”

We wrapped up our spa visit with a quick stop at a new restaurant in town that Kaitlyn insisted we try out after all what’s the use of having fun if you don’t try out new things? Their food was surprisingly good, and I made a mental note to drop by next time I’m in town.

We got home dead on our feet and exhausted but with huge smiles on our faces, and as we walked into the sitting room, we fell straight to the couch asleep till this morning.

Just as Kaitlyn promised, the stylist dropped in on us early in the morning. It was a tough time selecting a choice from the number of delectable dresses she presented before me. My selection became even more difficult by Kaitlyn’s outright dismissal of every dress I picked. “No, too dull.”

“Ugh, trashy. It looks unflattering on you.”

“That would have been great, but the style is so old school.”

After I exhausted all my choices with Kaitlyn disregarding every last one of them, I flung the fashion magazine with a huff and told Kaitlyn that I wasn’t sure I would attend this ball with her.

“What do you mean?” She cried out, horrified.

“I can’t seem to pick a dress,. I’m exhausted already and I don’t think I can stand any more selection process. You can just go on without me, I’ll be okay here.”

“Don’t you dare complete that statement Sophie Adams, you’re going to the ball with me and that’s final.”

I bowed in the face of her intimidating stance, “But you keep rejecting all my choices of dresses” I whined. “I’m not doing this again for real. Choose for me.”

“No problem sweetheart, I’ll pick something out for you.”

And so in a few minutes, we finally settled on a beautiful blue number with spaghetti straps and a long slit up to my thighs.
