It was as if the world around her was strapped to a rollercoaster—looping bizarrely throughAlice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

“I’m going to be sick,” Madison groaned.

Only then, did Alex finally acknowledge her presence at all. He unlocked his arm from around Jordan’s waist—demonstrating he actually did value his life—and reached out, grasping her arm as if to steady her faltering balance.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice laden with concern. For once.

“Peachy keen. Seeing as I’m Jordan’sfriend.” She stretched out the word for effect.

Alex shook his head. “Did I say friend? I meant best friend.”

Stassi’s voice, laced with unsettling sweetness, sliced through Madison’s spiraling thoughts. “Are you sure you’re alright, my dear? You look absolutely green,” she remarked, her tone, with a trace of amusement.

Madison shot a death glare to Alex.

Below his breath, he chuckled—chuckled—dismissing her distress with casual ease. “She always looks like that.”

That was it. She turned to leave.

Stassi, ever the gracious hostess, snagged her arm in invitation. “You can’t leave. The two of you must stay for dinner. We’ve only just had the soup. The main course is about to be served.”

Madison’s appetite was nonexistent, her anger suffocating any trace of hunger. “I’m not hungry,” she replied curtly.

To her surprise, it was Jordan’s turn to interject, her conviction firm. “I am. Starved actually. And you must give me the grand tour,” she insisted, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.

Madison’s gaze flickered from Alex to Jordan. “I really need to rest.”

“Of course,” Stassi replied, ushering Jordan in on one arm, and Alex in on the other. “There’s a guest room you can make yourself comfortable in while I get to know Alex and his wife.

Madison opened her mouth to speak. Nothing but hot air came out.

With that, they left.

A butler appeared. “Let me show you the way, miss,” he said.

She took a step. Her legs nearly buckled. Her plans to bolt for the car foiled.

He winged out an arm. “Let me help you, miss. The guest room is just up the stairs.”

Madison relented. It was either steamroll her body to the car, or rest and build her strength to lay into her husband later.

She took his arm. “Thank you,” she said.

“Of course.”

CHAPTER24

MADISON

“Shall we eat?” Stassi asked, thrilled.

“I’m not hungry.” Madison was firm, but polite. She also refrained from stomping her feet like an errant child, but oh, she wanted to.

“No worries. My home is your home. I’ll have the butler show you to your room while I get acquainted with Alex’s sweet wife.” She cupped Jordan’s face adoringly.

Madison rolled her eyes.

“This way,” the well-dressed butler said, leading her off.
