She lies down on the bed, grabbing her phone. No signal.

There’s a knock at the door. She thinks it’s Alex. But, it’s the butler. “The lady of the house sent his up, as Mr. and Mrs. Drake thought you might be hungry. He mentioned you had quite the drive.”

“Yes. His wife is delightful. A true gem.”

She eyed the extravagant basket of food, wrinkling her nose as he set it on the bed. It was as big as Santa’s sled, and overflowing with food. Junk food, mostly.

The problem was two-fold. Her husband was being a total butthead, and his hormonal wife really was hungry. She mustered out a small thank you between mental curses and crossed her arms. She focused on a silent mantra.I am not hungry—I will not eat this food.

Surely Jordan would return. Or Alex, right?

A note slipped under the door. She opened it.

Don’t eat the jam.

XOXOX

Alex

It was Alex’s handwriting. So, was it Alex?

She opened the door. Whatever ghost had slipped it through was now gone. Not even footsteps in its wake.

Madison could hear the jovial sounds of laughter coming from down the stairs, happy voices echoing up.

She sat at the top stair and listened.

“So, how long have you been married?” Stassi asked, her voice dripping with an overload of honey.

“It’s not important,” Alex said. He sounded overly polite—which meant he was pissed.

Well, that makes two of us.

“It’s so wonderful, getting to know you. We must be good friends, as we’ll be sharing time with Alex, no doubt.”

What?

Madison jumped to her feet—determined to set things straight…until the room began spinning like a carnival ride.

Deep breath in. Slow breath out.

There was no way she’d be tackling stairs in this condition. Between low blood sugar and her sudden thirst for blood, she needed to take a few minutes. Collect herself. Not be so freaking dizzy.

It was then that the babies got her attention. Like a wolf catching a whiff of roadkill, her stomach growled.

Her hunger protest didn’t last long. She tore through the basket of food. Every bite of the croissants were like bites of butter straight from heaven. And the bottles of Coke…well, that had Alex Drake’s fingerprints all over it.He knows I can’t resist Coke.

With the ravenous baby wolves in her belly satiated, Madison yawned. She was tired. Exhausted, actually. For the moment, she rested back on a pillow, her heavy lids unable to focus.

Until finally, they closed.

* * *

The sun peered though, brightening the room. What time is it?

Madison looked around, disoriented. “Alex?”

Blinking through her mental haze, she pressed a hand to her temple. This wasn’t morning sickness, or her normalmama’s got two buns in the ovenbrain fog. Her body was relaxed. Her brain, pure mush. And the scent of Alex tickled her nose.
