She looked over at the basket of food. The single bite of croissant, and the opened jar of jam, reminded her where she was.

The words from the card taunted her.Don’t eat the jam. Heavily, she sighed. It must have been drugged.

Wait. She’d been drugged.

Are the babies okay? She shook it off. It was just the one bite. Still, both hands cradled her belly instinctively.

As if in response, she felt a kick. Then another. Followed by a crazy little tap-dance on her bladder.

She scrambled to her feet, anticipating a wave of dizziness that never came. By how high the sun was in the sky, it had to be nearly noon.

She freshened up and washed her hands and face, then checked herself out in the mirror.

The clothes she’s had on were now replaced with a nightgown. A decidedly fancy one made of satin and lace. It was beautiful, in an over-the-top way.

In search of her clothes, she came upon a note on the pillow.

What did I say about the jam??

Come down when you’re ready.

XOXOX

Alex

Alex had been here. If Alex changed her into this outfit, it would explain why there was the trace of his cologne lingering about. She grabbed the pillow, breathing it in. A traitorous smile lifted. He slept here.

But…why did he leave?

Dismayed, she searched around. Her clothes were gone. She snatched her phone from the nightstand—it was dead.

She moved to the closet and fanned through the wardrobe, weighing her options. “It’s every outfit I could possible need…if I were Marie Antoinette.”

Madison inspected the row of gowns, exquisite enough for a formal coronation ceremony. Maybe there was a party happening.

Frowning, she skipped over the pink one, took a second look at the yellow, and finally settled on the silvery-blue. She’d never been that girly-girl her mom always wanted. Yettomboywas too much of a stretch.

Keeping up with her brother Jack meant she was following in the footsteps of a natural athlete, which she was not. It was like watching a Shetland pony chase after a quarter horse.

But she wasn’t a dolls and dress up girl, either. Instead, she’d always beat to the rhythm of her own drum. Books. Lots and lots of books. Books that, lately, were set in the romantic heart of regency romances, though not one of them described in any detail how to put these crazy outfits on.

Take them off? In spades. But, hell, it would take her all day to lace up the bodice. Thankfully, the size was forgiving in all the right places.

She fingered through her messy tresses and opened the door, following the sounds of laughter down the stairs.

CHAPTER25

MADISON

“Tu seras une mère extraordinaire,” Stassi gushed, slicing whatever was on her plate into minuscule bites.

“Me?” Jordan touched her chest, dressed as extravagantly as Madison, though her hair was beautifully upswept in curls. Daringly, she laid a hand on Alex’s. “An amazing mother? Well, it’s all I ever wanted to be.”

Confused, Madison pressed two fingers to her temple.Maybe I’m still dreaming.Which, would make perfect sense because at this point, nothing made sense.

Nothing.

“There you are,” Stassi said, raising a brow to Madison. “Join us for lunch.”
