“Stassi!” Madison cried, before a hand latched around Madison’s arm and she was yanked back.

“Enough!” Damian shouted, wrapping his free hand around Madison’s as he jammed a gun against her ribs. “Playtime is over. Say goodbye to everything you ever loved, Stone. Come along, Mrs. Drake.”

He slammed the door, leaving Alex and Stone both on their knees, tending to Stassi’s frail figure, lifeless on the ground.

An eternity later…

“Stassi,” Alex cried, over and over again. “Stassi!”

Nothing.

Jordan’s hand was gently on Alex’s shoulder as he desperately cradled her cheeks. “Stay with us, Stassi. Please! Stay with me…”

Stone’s voice was soft as a whisper, his eyes tearing up. “Chérie, nous sommes ici, mon amour. Nous sommes avec toi.”

My darling, we’re here, my love. We are with you.

With his hand in hers, eyes full of tears, sorrow and anger swelling his heart, Alex made one final plea to heaven and hell and anyone that would listen. He cried loud, “Maman!”

“Ahhhh!”Stassi’s gasp was loud and fierce and a fucking relief.

Her eyes shot wide. “What’s happening?”

Alex stared, a laugh of relief erupting from his chest. “You were shot. Are you okay?”

A smile melted across her face as her thumb wiped tears from his cheek. “Always so dramatic,” she teased. “I’m fine, my sweet boy.” Her eyes found Stone’s as her other hand held his. “My love had a few of my bodices blessed with a spell of impenetrability.”

Alex’s skeptical face turned to Stone’s.

Stone nodded. “Kevlar. I indulged her on a whim.” He brought her hand to his lips. “Thank God, I did.”

Jordan shoved at the door. “It’s stuck.”

“Emergency bolt,” Stone said. “The gunshot set it off once it closed.

Alex helped her to her feet, and left her in their care. “Madison.”

Stone pointed to Alex’s watch. “Run back the way we came. Tap the dial twice. You can track Madison with it.”

Alex did so, and a dancing dot appeared on the screen. “Paco really did give AJ the watch?” he muttered, reading Madison’s location.

Stone shook his head. “More like he set it out, and AJ took the bait.”

CHAPTER33

MADISON

“Move!” Damian barked, forcing her out as the sun blinded her to squinting.

“Where are you taking me?” she asked as Damian shoved her back through the front door.

“You’ll see. Now that my original plans are back on track.”

In haste, he forced her up two flights of stairs until they were up on the roof. Winded, she fell to the floor.

“Look,” he directed. She shot her glance off in the distance. “Seems like Stone’s son is resourceful after all.”
