“Um, I do if they are hot hockey players...” I glare at her.

I wrap my arms around her and lean into her side.

“I can’t believe you’re here! I’m so excited for us to have our Tuesday nights back.”

There’s a pause, and I look over at her.

“Well, we may need to change our Tuesday nights to Monday nights,” she says, stretching her arms in front of her across the table.

“Oh?”

“I got a part-time job bartending.”

“Already? Way to go, Mick! Where at?”

She pauses again. I turn my head slightly and give her the side-eye.You better not, Micky.

“Don’t be mad.”

I knew it.

“Here. This bar. Top Shelf. The bar where the team hangs out. That’s where you’re bartending?”

Why the hell does she have to work here? It’s bad enough she lives above it. Now she works here too?

“Yeah.” She cringes. “Here.”

My face falls, but I quickly regain my smile and feign happiness for her. That’s fine. It’s fine. Everything is fine.

“Why would I be mad? That’s awesome! I mean, you can’t beat convenience, right? When do you start?”

“Next week... Are you seriously still avoiding him?”

I give myself time to answer. It’s complicated, I’m still working on myself.

“I wouldn’t say I’m avoiding him. But I’m not seeking him out either. I don’t keep tabs on him.”

She fake laughs like a hyena. “Whatever.”

An eager server pops over to our table before we can set our purses down.

“Can I get you ladies something to drink?”

“Two French 75s. We’re celebrating,” Micky says, slapping the table.

“You got it.” He winks at her and turns to make the drink.

“He’s into you.”

“He’s about to be my coworker. Stop deflecting. Why don’t you just ask Lonan to the gala and then bang his brains out and make up?”

“First of all, aggressive much? Second, I’m going with somebody else...”

I look around the bar so I don’t have to look into the green eyes burning a hole in my face right now.

Micky tosses her hands up and barks, “Because you want to self-sabotage or...?”

My sigh doesn’t seem to be an acceptable response for her, so I continue, “No, but I don’t want to show up empty-handed and watch some other woman have her hands all over him all night. I don’t know if I’m ready yet. When I make my move, I want to be stable, I don’t want to begin a relationship and run out on him again because I’m scared. I thought that this way—”
