Freya: Nothing...

Me: Wanna get food?

Freya: Right now?

Me: Yeah. I’m bored and I’m hungry. And I kinda miss you.

Freya: Where do you wanna go?

Me: Let’s go to that shithole you wanna buy.

Freya: They got a C on their last inspection, we aren’t eating there. Btw I checked the public notices and they filed for bankruptcy last week.

Me: Well, then we better celebrate, darling.

I typed and deleteddarlingthree times before deciding to go with it.

Freya: How about fajitas?

Me: Meet me downstairs in 10.

“Mmmmm.” With closed eyes, Freya does a cute shimmy as she savors a bite of peppers and chicken. She’s not wrong either. These are hitting the spot. I don’t know how she’s been here only a few months and already knows which restaurants have the best food.

“Now who’s making sex noises when they eat?”

“These aren’t sex noises, they’re food noises.”

“Sometimes they’re both.” I wink at her.

I wipe my mouth with the napkin and sit back in the booth to observe her. She’s sexy when she eats. It’s not something she does in particular, it’s her nature. Everything she does is sexy.

“So, tell me more about Sugar and Ice.”

“What do you want to know?”

Everything. And I have no idea why.

“I dunno, what do you picture it looking like?”

She finishes chewing her bite and takes a sip of water.

“The best part about it is the front.” Her eyes track outside, and she points out the window.

“Wait—that’sit?” I see now why she wanted to come here. She wanted a good view of her future establishment.

“You’re right. It’s incredible. Wherever did you ever find such a place?” I ask sarcastically, rolling my eyes. The front is a big metal door, there’s a small window, but that’s it. The sidewalk is in disrepair. I figured she was downplaying it, but I was right on the mark when I called it a shithole.

“I know, it looks bad, but have you ever been somewhere that looks like a dump on the outside and then you walk through the doors and it’s like you’re entering a completely different world? It’s magical! That’s what I want. Granted, it’s rundown on the outsideandthe inside, but I plan on changing that. It has so much potential. High ceilings, brick archways, I suspect there might be wood flooring underneath the warped commercial tile. I just need to finish getting the capital.”

“How close are you?”

“About three months away.” Her eyes fall in disappointment. “I was hoping they could hang on a little longer. I might be able to get rent for a couple months, but without my full amount, I’m not sure if the landlord will let me have it without proof I can get it cleaned up. They’ve made it clear they’re hesitant to keep it a restaurant. I’m not sure what condition the kitchen is in, so I have to be prepared for purchasing new commercial ovens, which would take a larger percentage than what I originally allocated for appliances.”

“Tell me about your vision for the inside.”

“Why do you want to hear all this?”

I shrug. Truthfully, it baffles me too. “I find it interesting. And it’s important to you.”
