“Okay, so when you walk in, there’s this big arch I’m pretty sure is brick if you tear down the hideous plaster mural painted on it.”

“What’s the mural of?”

“Richard Nixon.”

“No, it isn’t.” I stab more food with my fork.

She grins around a bite of food. “He’s not even smiling.”

“Oof.”

“Right? Anyway, if the brick is anything like the stuff on the adjacent wall, it’s gorgeous. Can you imagine the brick archways? I want it to mimic a prohibition-style speakeasy. Maybe even have a password at the door.” Her eyes are twice the normal size when she describes it. I’ve not seen her so passionate about something before. “It’s a decent-sized space, but there’s a step-down area on the west wall, so I’d love to have a U-shaped bar in that area.” She’s drawing out an invisible map for me on the table. “Then over here, there’s some awkward structural columns, but I thought it would be cool to turn them into three-sixty seating around the load-bearing posts.”

“Clever.”

Her fingers continue their explanation over the invisible floorplan. “Over in this section would be a great spot for some grab-and-go desserts. Then I would have lounge seating across this area, intimate sections for business deals or small parties, couples on first dates. You know, like this.”

“Like this? What do you mean?”

“Isn’t this the date?”

“No.”

I haven’t had the chance to take her out and do something special. I suppose that’s on me. I need to make that right. When was the last time I was on a real date? I can’t fuck this up, it has to be something good.

“Isn’t it? You’re buying me lunch and asking about my dreams for the future. Sounds like a date to me.”

“I was bored and wanted to get food. You’re fun to hangout with, so I invited you to come with me.” I gesture between us. “But, I see your point. I’m enjoying your company. You seem to be enjoying mine. I plan to kiss you afterward...”

I waggle my eyebrows at her, but she responds with the classic Freya eye roll.

“If you want this to be a date, it can be a date. But it doesn’t count as the one I owe you from our bet.”

“You’re crazy.”

“So are you. That’s why we’re great together.”

TWENTY-SIX

“Where are we going?” She leans forward in my truck, looking around.

“If I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise.”

She turns and narrows her eyes. “Maybe I hate surprises.”

“If you did, you wouldn’t saymaybe. Also, you told me onFollowersyou liked them. And even if you did hate them, maybeI don’t give a fuck.”

“You should. I could make your life a living hell.”

“You already make it a living hell. Being around you is like having a migraine and an erection at the same time.”

“Fuck you.” She laughs and pokes my shoulder. “I’m lovely.”

The last couple weeks have been a breeze. Being with her is so easy. Most of the time, we spend our time together laughing and making jokes. When that’s not happening, we’re tied up in the bedroom or wherever else I feel like having my way with her.

“Speaking of surprises...” I clear my throat.I don’t know why I’m so nervous to ask her.“I’ve got an extra ticket for Thursday’s game. Will you come?”

“To watch you play?”
