“A professional what?”

Brynn cackles at my flippant remark. “Have you got a better idea?”

I look over at Nate now flopped out on the sofa in his boxers. “Maybe we could say that Kaan is with Nate?”

They both scowl at me.

“NO!”

“NO!”

“Maybe not!” Brynn is the most persuasive person I’ve ever met and, coupled with being my boss, that means I really have little choice in the matter. I sigh in defeat. “What precisely would I need to do?”

“Nothing too drastic.”

“You say that and then everything usually goes to hell.”

“Firstly, you two need to be seen.”

“I’ve got a root canal this week, you could come along to that.”

I don’t even bother trying to cover the disdain in my voice. “Only if I can be the one with the drill.”

Courtney pipes up. “Or you could go to the local for a pint.”

Brynn shoots a dirty look across the room at Courtney and Nate. “Why are you two still here?”

“We’re part of the ruse, now.”

Brynn ignores them both and turns back to me. “We need to be pro-active and not re-active. Only good publicity in the wake of Blair’s arrest. I’m arranging interviews for you, Kaan, to tell your side of the story. We’re talking honesty, transparency and relatability.”

“But lie my balls off about Nutmeg and I?”

“Deflection.”

Silence fills the room as Kaan’s bronze eyes graze over me no doubt evaluating my suitability for Brynn’s ploy. “Nutmeg said it herself. If her mother wouldn’t believe we’re together, how will anyone else?”

Brynn points at the photograph on my laptop. “Because this photo is pure gold. Anyone can see there’s something going on between you two.”

“Being straight is so complicated.” Courtney bends over my shoulder to look at the screen. “Yeah, it does look to me like you two are a couple.”

Bryn smiles triumphantly. “And there you have it!”

“How are we supposed to pull off a relationship when her whole schtick is that of a single girl.”

Regardless of my opinion on how ridiculous this idea is, I won’t have Kaan question my ability to do right by him as my client, even if doing right means being in a fake relationship for a few days. “Ah yes, but like Brynn says, I am the spectacularly single Meg Martin who hasn’t posted since my last awful date.”

“Dick-pic Stanton!”

I nod at Courtney before side eyeing Kaan. “Men are assholes.”

Kaan nods seriously. “I know I am.”

“The thing with this business, is that it doesn’t really take very much to point people in the direction you want them to look, and Brynn just proved right here—” I point at my laptop still open to the photograph of Kaan and I, “—that a picture really is worth a thousand words, even if it’s total nonsense.”

Bryn nods in agreement. “I really am the Queen of PR.”

“So, let’s double-down on that first photo.” I snap a photo on my phone which I quickly upload to Instagram with the caption, ‘Early to bed, early to rise.’ “Check my Insta. And follow me, will you?”
